I, AUCE agree to devote my culinary ventures to now include a XL BGE.
Well took the plunge and am SMOKIN BABY! I have been an avid smoker for many moons and come from a long line of smoking elders. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to all of you amongst other neophytes that have committed to Egg-Zen. I am a researcher by nature, and thus spent countless hours pouring over your posts and listening closely to the code talkers of the BGE world. Words like "spatchcock" at first cause my posterior to pucker and was sure this was some sort of flaying of..well.... you get the idea, and until initiated in a very secret clandestine meeting where I was required to stand in my boxer shorts and wave my hands over a smoking egg did I come to grips with the brotherhood I now belonged. I wrestled between Large and the XL and after careful consideration went with the XL. My needs vary and wanted to insure I would have capacity for the masses if needed. (ya never know when there could be a zombie apocalypse and every living relative takes refuge at our humble abode.).
My wife about had a heart attack when I told her I had DONE THE DEAL...the lacerations are healing nicely thank you very much. Now that the beast has been "broke in" for the recent holiday and is being used frequently she "had" started to warm up a little. My predilections for gadgetry are a curse the men in my family suffer from and it's those absolutely necessary gadgets that are sending her into a spin so she's now suffering from "spousal frigidity". It's worth it...This to shall pass as the wonders of the almighty egg with seduce her pallette into submission once I own all that's needed.
Thanks to you all!
Ed

Welcome - Enjoy the ride!! Well, now exactly what does that mean in the context of your dilemma? I believe you made the right choice with the XL. I also spent many sleepless nights deliberating on the pro's and pro's of the XL. I have never regretted my choice. I'm not sure I've heard anyone complain that they wish they had purchased a smaller egg instead, while you will frequently hear folks who wish they had more cooking surface.
Unfortunately, your satisfaction will most likely be short lived. Then you will come to see the wisdom in also having a smaller cooking platform. And the rub there is that you won't "need" it. At least in my case, that has never made much difference. My medium definitely sees more use than my XL, but if I were to only have one or the other, the XL would prevail.
Take this all with a grain of detritus - I'm now trying to "justify" a minimax...

@AUCE-one of the better intro/acknowledged sacrifices recently made on the alter of the BGE. Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. Since you have run-time in the smoking world you may want to experiment with the BGE before you buy too many eggcessories or you may find yourself with another ice age on the horizon.

If the ribs fail, then resort to lots of alcohol.
5 years or so ago I never heard of an Egg. A local radio station has an online auction a couple of times a years. A dealer had the small BGE as one of the items. I thought it was weird but after researching it and reading all the great reviews, I had to have it. I paid $270 for it which included the nest and cover. The same dealer also had $500 gift certificates; got one of those for about the same price. I got my Egg and every accessory, plus a bunch of other items including rubs, lump, fire starters, ect... for about $520.
I cook about 80% of my dinners on the Egg. The other 20% of time I wish I used the Egg. My daughter said the downside is the time it takes to get the lump going. I told her it takes 10-15 minutes. Get it going while prepping the rest of the meal. The Egg is then ready to go.
Once someone cooks and eats from the Egg, there is no going back to gas or electric. Even though it was raining tonight, I still grilled on the Egg.
I live in an apartment; been here for 16 years. Since owning the Egg I have had several new neighbors. One neighbor walked by and said that smells great, what are you cooking. I had to tell him 'nothing' 'Im just warming up the grill'. The current neighbor had friends over. The friend said 'Wow, just smell that'. The neighbor looked at him and said 'Yea, I get to smell that 5 times a week".

So, your avatar pic was taken BE (Before Egg)? If you ask, I'm sure most folks will tell you that time is recorded as BE and AE in their life.
