Musing on the Mini Max

We went to BBOutfitters yesterday to pick up a few things and to see the mini max. We were just a hair to late to see one built,,,,had just been purchased and gone. They took us to the back the back and unboxed one for us.
It is different that I imaged, the fire box is bigger than I thought and it will may hold close to the same amount of lump the small. My concern is how close the lump is to the grate. (After reading Mickey's post about the Woo prototypes that Tom is working on may not be a concern.)
The top is almost the same height of the small. Felt line cooking will have same cooking room as the small, but high in the dome pizzas will be limited to the small pizza stones (no big deal for pizza for two).
The weight was my concern...at 65+ pounds (shipping weight on box was 75) it is not a one person lift, but, with the built in handles two people should have not problem.
Will we be buy one??? Jury is still out. We have a mini (which I can carry) that compliments the small....Maybe I will win one at Salado.
Recommendation: If you only have a large and want portability of the mini with the cooking room of the small, then mini max maybe just the fit.

I checked on out too, yesterday. I noticed the perceived lack of height between the grate and the dome. I think with it open the obtrusive thermometer didn't help anything.

What are they asking price wise?

I absolutely love mine.  I only had an XL Egg prior to my Mini Max.  Now I have another cooking option if I only need to cook some brats or a couple chicken breasts.  I can't wait to head to the beach and have the Mini Max with me.  Gonna be nice to have some steaks and pulled pork/beef while vacationing.  It'll only take eating off the Mini Max a few times while on vacation to pay for itself.

It's the perfect compliment to the XL I already have and love.

  • I got one, definitely bigger and heavier than expected but a great addition to my XL and Medium.

I have eye-balled one at my local dealer's.  Weight-wise I don't think it's much lighter than the SBGE but definitely more compact.  Cooking-wise the SBGE equivalent grid size is a plus.  Looks like it won't hold the quantity of lump you can load into a SBGE but I don't think that's the target market.
Looks like it's perfect for the hot&fast cooks for week nights, tail-gates and perhaps restaurants.  I doubt it can run with the SBGE in a low&slow cook-not enough lump volume.  But just an opinion....and we all know what those are worth. :)>-

I have a mini max and small and agree with you completely.

I tailgate and thought the mini was too small, you know how many people start to gather once an Egg if fired up, so the Mini Max is perfect for me and a great compliment to my large.

I didn't even think about asking about the price...oops
@YEMTrey, @mgunders agree completely.  If I didn't have a mini that puppy would have been in my car asap.
@tbst the intrusive thermometer can be fixed by either putting the clip on the outside tapping thermometer into wine cork.

I'm still interested in the MM, for it's portability.
It just seems like it's taking too long to get here to the PNW.
I'm not the most patient person person on the block.

I'm also considering the Kamado Joe Jr.  It will b available here in the next couple of weeks.  Granted the KJ is a bit larger in size, but it seems to be at least the same weight, or maybe a bit lighter.  Certainty a defferent world price-wise.

  • I would love to get the mini max. I have a large, and think it would be a perfect companion. Something that has good cooking square footage but also somewhat portable.
