First run with my HeaterMeter 4.2.4

Smoked a maple fatty using my HeaterMeter 4.2.4 for the first time! It's awesome!

  • Nice work. I am sure that will be a fun and rewarding toy to have.

Very nice, I've been tempted to build one. Did you go with blower or the roto-damper? Where did you order the case, or do you have a 3D printer?

That's awesome. I love the graph of the temperatures- it ranks just below an animated GIF of food cooking. Looking forward to more feedback about the heatermeter. How much effort was it to build?

  • @CPARKTX - I wasn't using either on this one, but I actually configured it to use both. I'm starting with the blower only, but want to build the damper into a CNC'ed aluminum box with the blower at the other end. I ordered the case from a hub on 3dhubs.com. I've used the same hub a few times with great results.

@blind99 - If you know your way around a soldering iron, it's really quite easy to build! The through-hole board is nicely spaced and labeled with plenty of room on the pads... I went with thermoworks probes and they're reading the right temperatures with VERY little calibration.

I'm happy to answer any questions if you guys decide to build your own! This version I built for a thermocouple pit probe since I had one lying around. I'm planning to do another without the thermocouple though since the thermoworks pro probes are so accurate and a bit easier to deal with. There are 3d model files out there for printing cases of either model.

  • what are you using yo attach the blower to the egg? And do you have a damper door (the little swingy gate thing) built into it? Do you need it? I have a Heater meter as well, I just haven't built the fan mount yet as I am still planning on what to do, thanks.

What are the advantages of the robo damper vs a traditional blower?
  • @Stidrvr - I have a buddy that has a CNC machine so he is going to machine a box that fits through the grate opening tightly; fan will attach to the outside end of the box; we're machine a slot into top for a damper that will end up being a servo-operated damper if I can get it to work or simply a "swinging gate" if I can't. I'll post it up once we get it working.

  • @krames - with the blower that most folks use, you end up needing some sort of damper anyway because air can flow throw the blower even when it is not blowing. Some will use the damper only and set it based on how open they would typically have their egg's lower grate. For me, I want to be able to simply have a damper open / closed and control heat with the speed of the blower.

I'm running my first cook with the 4.2.4 build, only had one assembly issue, and two newbie questions :) That's pretty good for me.

I'm cooking ribs non turbo to check low and slow accuracy. I can see why folks build the damper. Bryan suggested that I just leave the upper vents as closed as I normally would for a 235 cook. So far, so good. I'll probably put on a damper in the future, ultimately I want full automation.

I haven't put on the heater meter case, or built a better blower enclosure yet.

Very happy so far, great project!
