Egg wont shut down

Eggs been at 300 for the last 15min. Does not look like its cooling down. Thinking of putting the cover on it to stop any air coming in. Bad ideal?

Do you have the ceramic top on it?

If so, you're fine.  Just let it be and it will come down.  The ceramic will heat up and and hold heat really well, so just give it time to cool.  I only put the cover on my egg when it's cool to touch.

  • Yeah, the ceramic top is on. Im pretty sure it never stayed at 300 for this length of time.

What is your concern?  Do you have somewhere to be?  You're not using a ton of fuel or hurting your egg.  Lots of variables come in to play that can change this cool down from others.  It could have been above 300 for a longer time.  Outside temperature may be different.  More lump could have been lit.

This reminds me of my SysAdmin team at work when they troubleshoot our images.  At what point during the imaging did it fail.  "I'm not sure, I don't just sit there for 45 minutes and watch it image".  I close the vents, put the cap on and walk away.  Come back outside several hours later and toss my cover on it.

There is always the chance your thermometer is out of calibration, but staying hot for 15 minutes is not out of the ordinary. The ceramic egg is a heat miser and doesn't cool off that quickly!

Could it be leaky gasket?  After it cooled down stick a light bulb in the egg in the dark, if you see light around the gasket it's time to call up @RRP for new gasket   ;)

Expecting the ceramics to cool down in 15 minutes is a bit silly.

Ah, running low on fuel so your awareness is heightened.  I was wondering.  I think you should be fine.  Getting a rutland from @RRP wouldn't hurt down the road.  It certainly helped my egg seal a lil better.  I also have a gasket on my ceramic cap.

I do have a leaky gasket. I also have the rutland but just to lazy to install.

I lined my ceramic caps with gasket too.  I lined one around the inside rim, and the other under the top because the rim was too tight.
