If you had to pick one lump charcoal to winter over with what would it be?

It is about time for me to stock up for the winter and I am wondering if any of you had suggestions for one brand of lump to get me thru the doldrums.
We mostly have BGE, Royal Oak, Wicked Good, and Cowboy here (I wont use Cowboy) so I am considering a bulk purchase via online or loading up the next time I travel to a more metro market. I have used FOGO and loved it, but it was not an everyday lump for me. The local lump is too expensive for me to make a bulk purchase and I am kind of also looking for a quantity buy deal.
What has worked for others who like to squirrel away lump until the crocus bloom again?
Thanks-

With the selection you have I would go with WGWW-that said, I have never used FOGO so can't apply that to the selection. If you are looking to buy thru firecraft then I would go with Rockwood. But as with any lump thread you will get many opinions-yours is the one that counts. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

I have not had any issues with RO and it is abundant and less than most lumps. It's my go to.Flint, Michigan

I'm with you Freddy. RO has never let me down. I do use OO and RW from time to time but RO is my staple.Fred19Flintstone said:I have not had any issues with RO and it is abundant and less than most lumps. It's my go to.

If you don't get a quantity discount, and it's available year round (firecraft), why do you need to load up?XL,L,SWinston-Salem, NC

In that case, I would order a pallet of Rockwood. Maybe you could find someone to split it with. Where are you?XL,L,SWinston-Salem, NC

Haven't yet had a chance to try RW, but I love OO. I baked 3 chocolate cakes on an egg Thursday for a local fund raiser just 10 feet from the front door of a million door home. I didn't want to risk smoke in the cakes nor in their home so I used OO and never received one complaint!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time!

@RRP-if you can pull that off with OO you will be impressed with Rockwood-at least as far as the lack of lump induced smoke flavor. Now OO is fairly subtle so it may have been the right pairing with chocolate. Regardless, congrats on the cook!Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Buy a pallet or more of Rockwood directly from @stlcharcoal and you'll save more. It helps to have a business with a loading dock that can take delivery for you.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

(de-lurking)WGWW .BGE and RO are basically the same thing except BGE is more expensive.I cooked mostly with RO for years. wife never liked egged food.local RO vendor could no longer get RO and started getting WGWW and I haven't looked back!wife actually likes food off the Egg now!I've never heard of OO or Rockwood. Actually, I've heard of OO but it's not available where I live.

My observation having used BGE charcoal for the last 8 years...
- -BGE charcoal isn't bad. Some rocks and stuff
- -Royal Oak isn't that bad, very cost-effective from Home Depot
- -Cowboy charcoal sucks pretty bad
- -the 100 lbs of Rockwood I bought from Firecraft were a disappointment given the fanboy love they get here on this website. I found it to have a LOT of charcoal dust, some very large (almost unusable) chunks as well as a distinct "aromatic" fuel-like odor that the BGE doesn't have
- -about halfway through the 100 lbs of Ozark Oak that I bought from Firecraft, I found it to have slightly less dust than the Rockwood, manageable-sized chunks, burns pretty clean. Overall, not bad, but just as BGE charcoal isn't worthy of the negative press it gets here, RW and OO aren't worthy of the love they get here either.
IMHO

BGE lump is made by RO. It's just in a pricey bag.Flint, Michigan

you say "in a pricey bag" which implies a lithograph quality or better...me thinks it is merely sold "in a pricey location!" LOLRe-gasketing the USA one yard at a time! -
Just had blackened pan seared then smoked halibut cooked on RO. No bad smoked flavor at all. I have used RO for the majority of my quick cooks since I started using kamados 6 or so years ago and I have never heard a complaint about smokiness. I have a bigger issue with small lump size than I do with lump giving a smoky flavor. I bought a couple bags of Rockwood from firecraft and ended up with several pounds of worthless dust in each bag. I would buy RO over Rockwood based off my experience. I have never had a bad bag of OO or Fogo either of those are great.

This topic seems to serve the left handed purpose as a reference point for newbies and that's fine. With that said I still think the most valuable source for people across the country are the evaluations made and shared over the years of multiple brands at TNW charcoal site! Otherwise many of these threads turn into the old put downs from years ago of "oh, yah, Buddy? Well, your father carries a purse and your mother wears combat boots!"Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time!
