My Bleeding Egg

I fired up my egg tonight to sear some steaks. It's been awhile since I've had it over 350 degrees.
Once it hit about 500, it started 'sweating' and bleeding water through the paint. Not only this, but it appears that two cracks have formed inside the lid (see link).
My guess is that the ceramic absorbed water, and then when the temps dropped this month the water froze and created stress cracks.
You can see water dripping out of the cracks on the inside of the lid.[p]Has anyone else experienced this? Should I be concerned? I'm afraid that my summer purchase won't make it through the winter. Santa brought me a cover so that should help but I'm afraid too much damage may have been done already.[p]I'll go to BGE warranty dept if this isn't common.[p]Happy New Year!

    mast3quila,
This is not only common, but normal too ;-) The egg is a living breathing thing.[p]My buddy Woo Doggies, who is a ceramics specialist, calls the hairline cracks in the glaze "crazing". Moisture naturally seeps through these cracks when the ceramic is heated. My eggs have been outside for 6 years and experienced temps from 15 below to 1500 above. 6 eggs, not one issue.[p]Everything is cool! Enoy it.

    mast3quila,

I have seen the same thing with my eggs. This is my first winter with them too so I was wondering it was normal or not. Thanks for clearing that up Chris. Thanks again for the rubs in transit aswell. It was really cold out the last time I had that happen and as the moisture ran off the egg it refroze to the deck making upward icycles . (Is that stalagtites or stalagmites?)

Nature Boy,[p]Thanks for such a quick response. If it's not going to blow up, I'm happy with it. Wish my concrete driveway fared as well with absorbed moisture.[p]BTW, for Christmas my wife ordered all 8 rubs and I got into them tonight. Did tater slices and steaks.
The slices mostly burned, or fell through the grate, but the steaks...MAN they were good. I took off two hours early so I could get things going before it got dark.[p]Thanks for the great service and a great product!

Nature Dude, you're so right.....crazing is not only indicative of ceramics, but of the people who cook on them............. ahem.[p]MasTequila, moisture is absorbed through the cracks in the glaze via the "capillary effect" and subsequently forced out with the heat of the cook. If you've had a lot of rain prior to a high temp cook then the weeping will be pretty apparent. Not to worry, this has been going on for thousands of years... and my eggs, like Chris's, have stayed out in the elements year 'round with no problems.
    Cook on![p]John[p]

    WooDoggies,
That is quite an amazing photo.
It has rained quite a bit indeed. Those cracks inside the lid are just character scars I guess :)

    mast3quila,
Yeah, concrete is not as forgiving as space age ceramics! Thanks much for the kind words, and for giving the rubs a go. [p]As far as the tater slices, if you can get a second cooking grate it is a good investment. When doing potato slices, or anything that can fall thru (even squid tentacles), just take your second grate and set it on your first grate rotated 90 degrees. only the smallest things can fall thru then! The grill toppers with holes also work nice.[p]Quilas toya!
