One less mouth to feed

We will be moving my youngest into the dorm tomorrow.  I asked this week what meals he wanted as his last regular home-cooked meals before his dorm adventure begins.  His first request was a splatched chicken.  That was Wednesday night.  Last night was fajitas.  He hasn't requested yet for tonight, but I'm guessing that it will involve the LBGE. My family loves my egging.  The unfortunate thing about our son moving out is that he was great at eating leftovers for lunch.  With that sink hole gone, I will have to cut back on my cooks.  The good news is that the dorm is just across town, so I bet he'll come home for dinner from time to time.

    In the short term maybe you'll egg less. My bet is that you won't be cutting back on your cooks by the end of the first semester. If he's right across town, you may just find yourself egging for his whole new batch of friends when they get tired of cafeteria meals.  :))

    I remember moving into my freshman college dorm like it was yesterday.  Hard to believe it was 25 years ago.  After a few days of cafeteria food I'm sure he'll be asking for something good!

    My freshman year was 52 years ago and I was 125 miles from home so that in itself weaned me from running home! Plus I didn't have money to spend to speak of so I learned to eat the dorm food and like it!

    My youngest returned after college. Took a year, but he got his own place, and I still haven't figured out how to cook just enough for 2.

    For me, "care packages" to college were chocolate chip cookies. Too bad pulled pork doesn't go thru the mail well.

    Liked it, um, no. Where I went, what was "maple syrup" in the morning was "brown gravy" in the evening. Or at least it seemed that way. And there was only 1 helping of anything except wonder bread and soda pop. Spent almost every cent I got buying pre-made food service sandwiches heated under a 250 W light bulb. Compared to those, beer was food.

    You should just make Ramen noodles on the egg for his last meal to get him accustomed to the college diet.

    @SmokeyPitt - Funny thing about this is that he had never had Ramen noodles in his life until a few years ago when he went to his friend's (and future dorm roommate) house.  It is a common lunchtime meal for the friend.  I wonder who will win out.

    Finally got the dinner request for tonight: Chicken Cordon Bleu (frozen chicken product from Sam's). Baked on the Egg, it's really good on the BGE.  Might whip up a batch of cornbread to bake out there too. He loves that.

    We usually have a big pack of Ramen in the pantry.  My wife gets it from BJ's or costco.  It's like $2 for a 3 square foot packag :P. 

    Do you cook the Barber Foods Chicken Cordon Bleu?  Breaded or non-breaded variety?  I have tried some of the non breaded on the egg and they were pretty darn tasty.

    Yep, that's the stuff.  Breaded is what I've always bought.  Didn't know they had a non-breaded option.  However, last week my older son suggested we do Egged Cordon Bleu of our own.  Chicken breasts which I pounded a bit to make it thinner and bigger, wrapped around some deli ham and fontina cheese. Took toothpicks to hold it all together. Cooked it indirect at about 400 if I recall.  Didn't want to have to turn them for fear all the good stuff would run out.  It was VERY good and we'll be doing it again soon, I'm sure.
