First attempt at the CyberQ

Well, I was successful at my first usage of the CyberQ.  The Spatchcocks that I made on the Egg were amazing.  The CyberQ did an amazing job and ramped down nice.  After taking a bit to set it up for infrastructure mode on Monday it worked REALLY WELL. I like how you can set this thing up remotely and view it remotely. If someone can advise how to get the email alerting to work correctly I would appreciate it.

You have my attention sir. Mines sitting in the box at the moment. I need to set it up this weekend for infrastructure mode also, looks a little daunting but the naked whiz does a good write up and review on the set up. Any tips you have please pass them along. I likely will only use for large slow and lows.

  • Actually, the manual that is online on the BBQ Guru site ( www.thebbqguru.com/PDF/CyberQ-WiFi-USER-GUIDE-REV2.pdf ) is really good especially if you have Verizon fios for your ISP.  By following it step by step I was able to set it up for infrastructure mode with very little trouble and can access the CyberQ remotely even when I am away from the house and am on an iPhone.  I need to figure out the email function so that it emails/texts me when it hits certain criteria.

Ultimately I want to access through my Iphone also. If its an overnight cook I just want to peek at the phone on my nightstand for the info. My router is ATT so I will see how it goes.

  • follow the directions for port forwarding, bookmark the address of your system, and you should have no issues for anywhere.  I am sure that the setup for infrastructure mode is similar regardless of the ISP.

@Firemedic6 - good work on getting the CyberQ up and running.  It is relatively straightforward, and works very well.  I haven't really seen the need for activating the email function - I'm not about to leave the egg running with no one home.  And checking it on my schedule via the web interface on the iPhone or iPad seems more valuable than looking at an email.

I've found the Naked Whiz site to be a valuable resource for simplifying the instructions.  The only real stumbling block for running in the infrastructure mode is the port forwarding.  And even this is simple, once you determine where that option is hidden in your router setup.  This has less to do with who your ISP is than the brand of router you use.

The real benefit of the CyberQ comes in longer cooks - using it for spatchcock is a good proof of function test, but maintaining a lower temp over an extended time is where the CyberQ shines.
