Mickey's rub work arounds

I am trying to put together a copy of the famous MCR......I was unable to come up with ancho chili powder or instant eXpresso coffee.....ssssooo we have decided to make a bastardized version this first time using eSpresso coffe beans we have and some Penzey's rib that already has ancho chili powder as the main ingredient.....hopefully,we'll get some idea of the taste, and then determine if we should go,to,the trouble of acquiring those 2 ingredients to copy the original more faithfully.....have any of ya'll ever attempted a workaround with this rub?

I've been thru a gazillion threads trying to find the original. Any pointers or copies around?

I just made my first batch on Saturday.  I see you mentioned Penzeys . . .thats where I got my ancho chili and the pricing was cheap.  I got the instant ground espresso at Krogers.  Here is the ratios I used:

SMALL BATCH - EQUAL PART INGREDIENTS:
    • Equal Part:   Instant Expresso Ground Coffee & Brown Sugar Ancho Chili Powder
    • ½ Part:    Black Pepper & Kosher Salt & Garlic Powder
~ Don't worry on exact, just close on measurement.

    Mickey's Coffee Rub
    FULL BATCH INGREDIENTS:

    1/4 cup salt
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1/2 cup ancho-chili powder
1/2 cup expresso ground (very fine) Coffee. (Has red, yellow&green label)
    1/4 cup garlic powder
    1/4 cup ground black pepper
    Procedure:
1 Mix all and keep in an air tight container.

I was able to pick up some Ancho Chili Powder at the Fresh Market in Asheville, NC yesterday... I would assume they would all have it depending on their size of the store.

It was $5.99 for a 2 oz (or more) jar.

I've never even SEEN a HEB store. I can get ancho easily, but not for that price!

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

You can substitute any chili powder or hot Hungarian paprika, just keep in mind that many of the chili powder mixes have salt.

I never found Penzey's "cheap". 1 lb of ancho pwdr is $14+ plus shipping.

My local spice store has it for $12.44 a pound. Plus shipping.

And $12 at the Spice House.

HEB wins!! If I had a HEB. :(

Penzeys is cheap for me. As fresh as it is, it can't be beat for what I can find locally.

Scoot around on the carpet on your front paws and butt...I mean arms, it's a little temporary relief.   Learned that trick from the pets.
