small egg problems

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
I have a large egg and just got a small. I am having trouble lighting it as fast and getting it as hot as the large. I use a mapp torch and a hand held fan. I have trouble getting it to 400. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • make sure that the fire box opening lines up with the outer shell opening, use large pieces of lump on top of the fire grid, then the smaller ones.Open the lower vent fully & have the daisy wheel fully open as well.
    now let her rip......
  • cutlet,
the only answers I know of are not enough lump and/or not enough air. Is the firebox lined up with the lower vent? No ash clogging things? Bottom and top wide open?[p]TNW

    cutlet,
my small takes much longer to get up to high temps than the large, about twice as long. three things speed it up for me. use half a load of lump instead of a full load(more air flow thru the lump gets it going faster). make sure to clean out the ash well, it builds up quick in this cooker. a weed burner is much faster than a mapp torch

    cutlet,
it may not be any consolation but others have had the same problem as you with a samll. I OTOH do not and I'm one of the lucky ones who can hit 750 with mine. It does takes more time, but I can get there time after time. The only thing I make sure is to not use any large pieces of lump - if they fall out of the random bag I remove them.[p]Furthermore as for the issue of why one is hot and the next one is not - all I'll say is it's just like the gasket issue - some eggs seal fine with no gasket, but others of us need them.

  • cutlet, I have been using my egg for a long time and I have found the only way to start any fire in my large or small bge is to use my turkey fryer and my chimney starter. In 5 to 8 min. I can have and 8hundred degree fire in either it is the best way. I have been using this setup for years and I am still using the same propane container, dont do too many turkeys fried anymore because they just dont compare to the big green egg.
