Mold in Egg

I was using my egg as a smoker with a water pan. When I went to use it several weeks later, it had mold in it. I have cleaned it several times. Ive tried cleaning it with bleach, letting it dry heating to 450 for several hours but it always comes back and seems to get worse. Has anyone wlse had this problem? HELP!

    Where do you live?
    Best thing to do when discovered is to just fire it up and let it go full blast. Leaving crusties on the grid increases your mold chances. Cooking infrequently does as well. I don't cook as often as I'd like so when I know I'm going to be cooking the next day or in the evening I fire it up if there is any mold present and let er rip. For those cooking now and there is mold events a propane torch to burn it off works fine, I go over the entire grid really well and get any funkies that may be lurking on the fire ring as well.[p]The bleach probably was not a good idea, but I most definitely would not use any other cleaners. When things build up in the dome just use a brush to knock off the flakey stuff. The egg seems to season, kinda like a cast iron pot.

    I live in chicago, I also have another problem. I know most people don't grill in the winter but I do. When the temperature drops well below freezing my Egg freezes shut. I have replaced the gasket but it is fozen shut right now.

    don't think of yourself as the lone ranger in Eggdom! Most all of us egg year around. As for being frozen shut, merely open your bottom vent and toss in a Weber cube and light it. That should thaw it and when openned carefully should save your gasket. My eggs sit outside year around, but I do cover them - even an inexpensive tarp from Menards for less than $5 will work.

    On warm, sunny days, I raise the lid & let the sunshine & heat cleanse the egg. Haven't had a mold problem in 7 years.

  • mark,[p]I also live in a cold climate and use a drop light with a 60 watt bulb thru the top vent of the cooker when I am not using it and that will keep the cooker from freezing shut. Your ceramic lid will fit right over the wire. I never cover the cooker with the cover and don't have any problems.[p]Dave
