Might Have Blown Gasket

Last cook before tonight was pizza cooked at over 700 degrees. Outside temp today was about 38 degrees and wind at 25-30 mph. I started the fire with a chimney in my garage and when I went outside to dump it in the egg, the egg took off like a wild fire. Stabilized the egg at 400 degrees and cooked my chicken. Went out 4 hours after shutting down the egg and it was about 200 degrees. I wiggled the lid, vent, and cap hoping it was just the 30 mph wind finding its way into the egg. Does a blown gasket look damaged? Is the dollar test more reliable then trying to create a lot of smoke to watch for leaks? Like I said, I hope it's just the wind creeping in. I don't use gasket material on the chimney and the rain cap was rattling a bit in the wind. Has anybody else experienced this before?

Dollar test once egg is cool. Most gaskets that are "shot" it's fairly obvious. When you say rain cap are you referring to SS Smokeware cap? If so use the insulation provided.

If you are using the SS rain cap, definitely put gasket material on the dome or the interior ring. This could be your culprit since that cap doesn't "seal" like the ceramic one does because it doesn't sit directly on the top ring of the dome. If it is the ceramic cap, I suppose it could be the culprit if the wind was strong enough to rattle it, though less likely than the SS one.

Actually it was the ceramic cap. I think this is the biggest wind of the year so far. I wasn't even gonna egg, but I wanted to see if I could do it.

The only more windy place I can think of is Keflavik Iceland. You could fly like Mary Poppins in Keflavik (it was Cr A zy)!

Wind sucks, but at least the egg makes it bearable. Too many canceled cooks do to wind before the egg. Definitely need to figure the leak though so I am not wasting lump.

Wyoming's wind is one thing I do not miss. I was at my dads over Christmas one year and I swear that the house was going for a ride to Oz.
