This is getting more confusing. Now I don't know what to drink either. I'm sure I'll come up with something.

All the above are great ideas, just remember to keep the temp at 400 or below for the first two cooks to seat the gasket. I did burgers then chicken. Pork butt is great one and it gives you a lot time to sit by the egg and have a few beers or what ever you like to drink. Enjoy and welcome to the addiction.

Pork butt. Forgiving cook and you can play with the vents to learn temp control. Start it out low, bump the temps up, and then try to take the temps back down and see how long it takes.
My thoughts exactly you have all day to play with the vents and you can cook a but anywhere from 250 to 400 and it will still taste good, try to keep it under 400 though...

Chicken first, they are cheap or pork butt. Then, anything and everything

Got it assembled. Ready to go. Looks like the menu is: 1. Stuffed jalapeños. 2. Boneless skinless thighs and breasts with mickeys coffee rub 3. Plenty of beverages. I'll probably fire it up a couple hours before I cook so that I can work with temp control. imageimage

I think I'm as excited as you are right now. Firing it up for a while is a good call to ensure you burned through all the bad smoke. With all the excitement it's easy to plop food in right away. I recommend not using any wood for smoke at first because the smokiness varies with each brand. Last thing you want is SWMBO complaining about food being too smoky the first go around.

Spatchcock a chicken and you will never look at grilled chicken the same way again. :)

I would just light the egg and play around with the temps for a while. Get used to how the air flow works, and let it hold a temp for 45-60 minutes (somewhere between 275°-325°). Smell the difference between good smoke and bad smoke.

Then I would do a spatchcock chicken (400° raised direct for around an hour) with Mickey's coffee rub.

    I agree 100%

  • Congrats on the new BGE. My wife and I love cooking pizzas on it. Can't cook one in the oven once you have it on the egg. Papa Murphy's pizzas work great if you have one by the house.

My recommendation would be whatever you've cooked in the past on a BBQ that you like and feel you do a good job of.  Do what you already know how to do, just do it on the Egg.  After you're comfortable knowing how to cook on the egg what you already know how to cook, then experiment with doing things you haven't done before.

Everything went well. Had a little trouble with temp control, but I'm sure it will get easier with time. Chicken was very tender and juicy. Had some friends and their family over, and got great reviews. Loved the rub. Overall, great first experience, and very pleased with the results. Looking forward to trying other stuff.
