Goat curry is a staple at most Indian non-veg buffets. Indians typically cook the younger goats (like spring lamb or cabrito) which is why it has a clean taste. Most Indians say mutton when they mean goat, so watch out for that at restaurants - the meat will be young goat, not sheep. It's usually cooked in a braised sort of way, or in a pressure cooker. I've had good results in a crock-pot too.Which/where was this restaurant? I remember you're in Iowa, but don't remember where. There was a place we used to go to in Cedar Rapids that was decent.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

Young goat is fantastic. To me it tastes like a sweeter version beef. Old goat is so so. I'd rather have lamb.Dunedin, FL

We have a very decent curry house nearby called The Taste of India in Cool Springs. They do goat several ways - hot, spicy Vindaloo with tomatoes and potatoes is sweet and tangy. Korma, with a creamy sauce is pleasantly mild. Their plain Goat Curry in a Madras-based brown sauce is the best ever. I can understand people being a little reticent but the risk is well worth the reward.

Goat meat has a fair amount of fat and you will sometimes get a mouthful of it. Just spit it out and carry on. What Caliking says is truw, younger goats is mo better.

You need a new butcher! I recently found one not too far from our house - best goat meat I've bought in the past 8+ years.Little Steven said:Goat meat has a fair amount of fat and you will sometimes get a mouthful of it. I get great goat. I meant, although I did not verbalise it properly, that some retaurants have fat goat.caliking said:

I am in Cedar Rapids. It was Taj Mahal on Center Point Road NE near 42nd Street. I have eaten there many times and this was the first they had the goat dish. I would definitely have it again.
There is also Taste of India on Old Marion Road, but it has only been there for about 2 years so depending when you left the area it may have not been in business. I also like to eat at Masala when I am in downtown Iowa City but it is strictly vegetarian.

@bettysnephew - I have eatne at Taj Mahal a number of times when we lived in North Liberty (worked in Iowa City). I liked it better than the couple of Indian joints in Iowa City. Their naans were pretty good too. We moved in 2009, before Taste of India was open.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

For a while a couple of years back, the food was not as good, but they must have hired a new chef/cook about 2 years ago and the quality has gone back up. Just really good food with a nice variety.A poor widows son.
