New XL BGE waiting in the garage...

I wanted to say hello and look forward to spending some time on this forum.  I purchased a XL BGE last weekend and had it delivered and assembled.  I called around several dealers and finally found the son and pop store I wanted to purchase from.  The package included the nest, lump, starter bricks, grill gripper and ash tool. I also purchased the plate setter which will now be returned since I found this site and placed an online order for the woo2 adjustable rig combo with 20 inch round stainless grid and combo slide guide / crossbar.

I have been looking at table ideas and found the naked whiz site... Lots of great ideas but I've decided to turn this workbench (that I will be purchasing on Friday) into an egg table by cutting a hole on the left side and letting the egg sit in the actual nest without any support from the table.  It will look built-in but it will only be supported by the nest.  Does anyone see any potential issues with this planned set up?

I will post pictures when it is complete but now I need to explain to the wife why I need a Mapp torch, thermapen, maverick, welding gloves...

Go big or go home!

does the woo2 rig have a heat deflector?  if not keep the plate setter, or I love my half moon raised grid with a ceramic deflector.

  • Welcome..

I am no table pro...i still cook out if my nest...i was going to build a table as soon as i aquire my second egg but then i saw pics of a few fires and it changed my mind...i already cook on a wood deck so i am thinking adding wood closer to the egg is just asking for trouble... Many people do them and they look great...

I do find i need more space the just the mates so i think i am going to build a table just for prep and storage. That table in your pic looks pretty low to me...are you planning to increase the height somehow? Very interesting...keep us posted.

Used to have a large table with the large egg.  Threw the table away, bought nests, and things were so much easier.  Freed up some real estate as well.

    http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com/military-issue-unique-items-odds-and-ends/metal-folding-table.html

Nests give you different setup options on the patio.  Bought an old military surplus heavy duty olive drab folding table(thing weighs like 14lbs), sprayed it with high temp BBQ paint, and lined the top with HD foil.  Liked the fold up table so much I bought a second one and painted it to match the Weeber.

Don't know it I would go through the trouble of cutting a hole in that workbench.

Welcome... With the AR, no need for platesetter.  Sell it online and whoever shows up to buy it, tell them to go buy an AR instead.  Rinse and repeat.  Can you take the platesetter back?

Mimauler/Stevesails - The woo2 package comes with the 17.5 inch round ceramic stone. Do I still need the platesetter?

Mike - The table is 29 inches high so it is a bit low.  The egg will sit in the existing nest and so I am assuming half of the egg will be above the table top...  I hope it works out!

Platesetter is still in the box unopened so I am assuming I can still take it back...  $115 towards the AR.

Do you have to cut the table? What about just placing the egg next to it?

    And enjoy the ride!

Welcome to the club, I just joined a few weeks ago myself and I have about the same set up except I got the side tables too I want the AR with the Woo 2, but can't afford it right now. I'm with caliking and just place it next to the egg for now and see how that works before you cut a hole in to it. What's your firsf cook going to be?

The real question is, why not?  ;)

Cooking different items at different temps.  Smaller size for portability.  It is nice to delegate one egg for greasy BBQ grilling and one for pizza and baking.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I will be wheeling the egg in and out of the garage for use so it might make sense to keep it on the nest.  Game time decision once I see the table.

Ladeback69 - My first cook will be this Saturday and I'll probably go with a whole chicken and burgers.  Sunday I'll get a little crazy and throw on some ribs (lunch) and pizza (dinner).

The woo2 adjustable rig combo shipped 30 minutes after I ordered it yesterday (awesome service) so I hope to receive it before the weekend.

    Cheers

Be very careful wheeling your eggs around.  They are very top heavy and there have been many a sad story of broken eggs from rolling them in the nest.

Welcome. After the thermapen and an indirect method hold off on more purchases till you decide your needs and wants. I like my table and it's mobile as much as I need it to be. However, I would build it differently if I had waited. Jmho.

With the ceramic stone you can do indirect so the plate setter isn't needed. I just got my XL a few months ago and I kept the plate setter and bought a Woo2. I regret the plate setter now but too late since I used it.

If you are going to wheel it around maybe look into the grip bar?

Might take a look at spatchcock method for cooking the whole chicken...I did my first one a few weeks ago and I will never cook a whole chicken a different way again...It was easier then I thought it would be and I wished I would have tried it sooner.

Nakedwiz dot com / spatch dot htm has a good tutorial

Yep, be careful wheeling in and out of the garage. Eggs have taken a spill in the past going over the lip from the garage to the driveway. Pull, don't push, but don't pull it by the handle.

+1, pull by the nest. If you will be moving it frequently (sounds like you will) you might want to look at the Nest Handler:

  • If you decide to go spatchcock as @Mike_the_BBQ_Fanatic suggests, follow the nakedwhiz recipe, but do remove the keelbone, it's very easy, there's a few video tutorials at youtube.

I would hold off the pizza for after some more cooks or a long low cook, doing a high temp cook in a new Egg may result in a burnt gasket.

Be sure to read up (or watch a few youtube videos) about flashbacks, they can be a serious thing at pizza temps.

    Cheers!

If you have time fire it up before Saturday and play with the vents and temp control. Do 2 chickens. Pull one for chicken salad

Thanks everyone!  I may need to hold off on the pizza.

The handle looks expensive...stability is part of the reason I want to put the egg in the table.  Will be posting pictures this weekend.
