JB Weld and the Firebox

Couple of questions for the JB Weld experts out there.  Firebox cracked (replaced under warranty) but want to try and repair it and bank the new one til the old one for sure gives out.     Three pieces and I have the two biggest ones setting up with the JB Weld.    Now that I have it in the garage with some good light, I am noticing several other hairline cracks throughout.    Is it going to help slow these down if I run a coating of the JB weld over them?  Or am I you know what in a fan and must accept the fact they it will crack there soon?

Also, the package says temperature is good to 550 F.  I am assuming this is just guidance and I can run it on up there as high as I need for steaks, etc.    Thanks guys!

    Personal experience is those smears you mention over hairline cracks will not last as the pores of the ceramic are not sufficient to have much "grab strength". As for the 550 the firebox environment is far far hotter than 550...don't expect wonders!

    Don't understand why people keep asking about JB Weld and high temps. The people who MAKE the stuff say it won't work. 

    I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

    I have a series of pictures I took trying to clamp a two week old replacement fire box when it had cracked in half. I used a Pony web clamp, a spacer for the cut kerf in the box, and further more a special set of large fender washers that I bent to be concave and convex to hold a bolt and nut securely. Even with all that time and effort spent it was time wasted as it still broke. JB Weld maybe terrific stuff for some repairs, but a firebox operates in an intensely hot and hostile environment and isn't up for the job! There are refractory products made by companies such as Rutland that withstand far higher temperatures and a better chance of holding, so next time I may try that. In the meantime gravity holds my firebox which is now in 3 pieces just fine!

    Broke a leg off my plate setter about 3 years ago...used JB Weld to put it back together and it has held together perfectly. Since I only use this on low and slows not sure how hot I've gotten it, but it certainly was worth it in my experience. More than worth the gamble in my opinion.

    The more I look the more I find in the crack arena   I will give it whirl since I already purchased the JB Weld   If it doesn't work I am not out anything     Thanks guys

    Putting JB weld on a crack is pointless.  Cracks ain't breaks.  Just let it go or bust it in two and then JB weld it.  My 0.02 euros.

    Would you want to eat JB weld?  If not, don't put it into a high heat environment where it is sure to burn and give off some of it's nasty carcinogenic compounds for them to land on your food.

    Burning JB weld lends a certain je ne sais quoi to red meats....  It's all a matter or personal preference to me.  I did not know it was carcinogenic.  Heavens.

    Works fine for a plate setter but wont last 1 cook on the firebox. Have experience with both.
