Love FOGO lump

To me this stuff is hands down the best lump you can get for low and slow cooks. Not the best for every day cooks due to the time it takes to get going cause its so dense but it burns forever. This is my xl I just filled up and no sorting just poured it in and the bag was already about a 3rd gone. I had to pick a couple pieces out cause they were too big. This will make my xl go 35 plus hours on 1 load.

@Lit Where is the best to get it ? Shipping?XL, Large, 2 Small's and Mini BGE Arlington Texas

Another thumbs up for Fogo, the pieces are HUGE. I also think (not verified) that the lump burns hotter than RO.I bought mine on Amazon (Free shipping), unfortunately its out of stock currently.
-
Yes amazon. You have to watch the price it fluctuates between $35 and $45 for a 35 pound bag. Its eligible for prime so prime members get free shipping. It would probably not be too cheap to ship without prime. Next time its available I am going to get at least 100 pounds.
-
Just realized that they have 17.6 pound bags for sale also. Its cheaper even than the 35 pound bags. I have never tried the smaller bags but I just got 3 since I am on my last bag. $19.99.

Is this better than rock wood since we can get the rock at aceJefferson .GA.Been egging since 1985 on a medium egg

Its different. I wouldn't use it as my daily lump since it takes awhile to light like the old wicked good. But it burns forever and is big chunks which improves air flow and lowers tour chances of a fire going out on a low and slow. Its worth a try for sure if you do long cooks often. I actually got some Rockwood shipped to me and was not a fan but I'm gonna try another bag from ace.
-
I really like the rockwood, great stuff. With my limited experience, it's the best I've used.

I am gonna give Rockwood another shot for sure for daily cooks. When I opened the bag my wife actually said the lump itself had a good smell. My only issue was there was alot of small pieces which I'm not a fan of. Most of the other posts here have had different experiences though so I'm guessing I just got a bag that was on the bottom of the pallet and got beat up. I wish pallets were still available in Georgia so I could get better prices. My closest ace wants $25 a bag.
-
@Lit - you're the reason its sold out!Fogo used to be much cheaper, but I guess folks discovered that it was good and made a run on it. Amazon's pricing responded accordingly. I ordered a bag some time back, but am yet to crack it open. Maybe I will give it a whirl the next time I do an overnight cook.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

How ironic, I just noticed that lump at Amazon about 30min prior to reading this. Appears to have great reviews.

Is this really a huge difference compared to rock wood.45 bucks seems high for 35 pounds. Amazon had 13 last night and this morning they have 9. Is it really worth the priceJefferson .GA.Been egging since 1985 on a medium egg
-
I have not used Rockwood foe low and slows yet but I know fogo is good. I will have the smaller bags in a couple days and will let you know if they are as good. The 17.6 pound was $19.99 so about a dollar a pound.
-
Now that Amazon is charging tax in NC...my prime membership has lost some luster. From Firecraft for Rockwood it is free shipping for orders over $99 and no tax. Each 20 lb bag of Rockwood is $19.95.So five bags shipped to my door is $99.75That works out to right at $1 per lb to my doorLet's say I want the same 100 lbs of Fogo from AmazonThree 35 lb bags will cost me $144.12That works out to $1.37 per lb to my door for 105 lbs6 17.6 lb bags will cost me $128.04That works out to $1.21 per lb to my door for 105.6 lbsHas anyone tried both Fogo and Rockwood. If so...is the Fogo worth $45 more per 100 ish pounds?
-
I don't think Fogo is that much better than Rockwood...
I think for best all around performance vs. value, you aren't going to do much better than Rockwood...
You already have different woods for smoking, why bother now having to have different lumps depend on cook type? If you use Fogo for the low n slows, what are you going to do the next day when you want to do a couple of steaks using the remaining lump? Clean it out and load fresh with another brand? No thanks, not trying to make my like any more complicated than it is currently?

As has been often demonstrated, charcoal is like religion and politics. You need to figure out what works for you, whether you base your choice on price or other characteristics is your call.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

It looks like the price on FOGO fluctuates quite a bit.
