Electric egg?
Marty
Posts: 16
I'm new to this so please excuse the question if it is dumb, but is there any way to make the egg electric? Seems like it would be the perfect solution to keeping temperatures stable, and less attention needed while smoking? Chips could still be added for smoke right?

Marty,
I bet if anyone can make the Egg electric it would be one of those Texas Eggheads. They are the ones who come up with all those neat little gadgets.

I've been meaning to try the top from a countertop convection roaster on the chimney one of these days.

Marty,[p]It could probbly be done, but if electric is what you want you should probably just get an electric since you would be giving up most of what makes an egg, well, an egg...[p]

McKevin,
Well, yes, but you would still have the benefits of ceramics...maintain heat and distribution.

yes, you can.
buy a single round burner coil with the adjustable thermostat (the kind that is sold for dorms) and place it where the charcoal grid sits. Run the wire out of the lower vent. this would be good for very low & slow smoking [almost cold smoking]
make packets of wood chips in aluminum foil & place on top of the electric coil. I bought one of these burners for $14.00, but have not used it yet.
let us know if you try it. -
Marty,
After a very brief learning curve you would realize that holding stable temps is not a problem with the lump charcoal..and the amount of attention given is more a matter of say flipping your ribs every hour which you would do no matter what heat source you were using...all the issues you are looking for in an electric grill already exist in the BGE...HTH[p]Wess

Marty,[p]The bbqguru might apply as "making the egg electric". It's a small electronic device with a fan that attaches to the egg. It monitors the temperature via two thermocouples, and regulates the fan output appropriately to maintain a constant temp.[p]-smokeydrew

Marty,
i dunno how you could make it easier to keep temps stable or require less attention.[p]that's why i got the egg in the first place

Marty, I have seen a conversion done using a hot plate in a gym locker. You could do the same by putting a small hot plate in the bottm of the Egg. Maintaing heat with a voltage controller. It is workable. A pan or basket just above it for chips/chunks.
