Storing Spices/Rubs outside
shadowcaster
Posts: 620
I am getting sick of having two cabinets wasted due to spices and rubs and digging through both to find the one I am looking for. My idea is to build a hanging spice rack for the kitchen. I was thinking of building a smaller one for my egg table that could be stored in the cabinet then taken out when I am using it. In the spring/summer/fall I like to do most of the prepping outside if possible because I have a smaller kitchen. Do you think it would be a good idea to store the rubs like Dizzy Pig and other similar products outside? They would be inside the table so they would not be out in the elements. I'm at work now so I can't look at the jars to see if it says how to store them. Just thought I would ask before I start the process. Thanks

I wouldn't... Just asking for critters to come looking
Have the same issue with the spices and rubs... Maybe something like this might help

In a humid place like MI I would think you would get a ton of clumping as well...worse outside than in?

We got one of these for easy storage and portability. They work great!

Michigan is humid?? haha yea I guess I didn't think of that aspect of it.@hapster I have looked at those before but I was thinking of building a wooden self/rack that I could store them all on. I have empty wall space where I think would be a perfect spot.

I definitely wouldn't at the family's place in western Michigan, way too humid and way too many critters, but we are about a quarter mile off the shore there. Don't know about where you are shadowcaster.

alot of rubs have that foam seal that most discard when they first open the jar, i put it back in under the cap before it goes back onto the shelf, seems to keeep it fresh longer. definately keep that if its stored outside.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Yea it looks like I will not attempt it, though it would be a cool idea but probably not practical

I wouldn't do it, but then again I bet it gets a lot hotter here in Dallas during the summer. I don't think exposing your rubs to heat would be a good idea for long term storage. I think it would really mellow out the rubs. I could be wrong...

I was thinking about it at lunch and might incorporate a "portable" rack into my wall unit. Make the bottom piece removable. I can store most of my BBQ rubs on it and just grab it and take it out while I am egging. I know I might be "over thinking" it but I like doing little projects that are fun and original.
