Smokeware Stainless Steel Vented Chimney Cap Question!

I recently purchased the SS vented chimney cap from Smokeware. My LBGE already has a gasket where the daisy wheel goes.

My question: Do I need to peel off the current gasket and replace with the new gasket provided from Smokeware?

I've read on the forum it is better to put the new gasket on the male end of the SS chimney cap. Just need to know if I should remove the current gasket that came with my egg or not.

Thanks!

  • I  would just leave the old gasket on until It burns up or need replacing. Then you will have a extra to use when the time comes.

Thanks Jeff - just wasn't sure since I've seen a lot of posts from people who had issues with having the gasket on the egg itself instead of on the SS cap.

I have one and attached the gasket to the Egg but I believe the prevailing opinion on the forum is to attach it to the cap.

@dihtn - did you remove the "old" gasket first that was already on the egg?

  • I have had the gasket and its the old gray felt kind on my egg for about 6 months and have not had any problems with it melting even on 700+ cooks.

Here is a pic of mine

Im confused. Are the newer egg coming with a gasket installed from the factory? My egg never had a gasket around the top until I installed one when I got my SS car from egg ware.

I guess what I was saying if you already have one installed on the egg itself then I would just leave it until it needs to be replaced. There is no reason to remove a perfectly good gasket to install a new one on the cap instead of the egg.

I did not have a gasket on mine until I purchased the SS Chimney Cap.

@Jeffroe189 @dihtn - yeah my egg came with a gasket installed when I bought it from Ace Hardware back in October:

Maybe I should have put that picture in my original post. That's why I was confused - didn't know if I should waste a perfectly good gasket or not.

My large egg came with the gasket tape. It was included with the other hardware. I had to install it.

Thanks Charles - have you had any trouble with the original gasket melting at high temps?

Count me in the camp that applied my gasket to the SmokeWare itself. That way when I do a burn out I can remove the gasket from harms way.

So should I try removing the gasket that is already installed on my egg and attempt to place it inside of the Smokeware? Would it have enough adhesive to stick? Anyone tried this?

I think it would be tough to salvage it after removing. I would just keep it as is and save the gasket that came with the Smokeware top. If/when the gasket you have now fails, just put your new one on the cap.

I always remove the smoke ware to put out my fire with the ceramic. It just does not do a good job putting out the fire.

That's weird. Mine shuts the egg down much faster than the ceramic cap. I used to not be able to cover the egg until morning and I can now cover it within 2 hours of 600 degree cooks.

+1. Mine works just fine for snuffing out the fire. The beauty of the Smokeware cap is that you don't need separate pieces for different functions - one item regulates the temp, acts as a rain cap, and shuts the fire down.

Gasket is on the top vent. If that burns off, I'll apply the replacement to the Smokeware cap as mentioned above.

  • fence0407 in answer to you question about the gasket melting at hi temps as of now no problems  however the gasket is just starting to peel at one end so I think that I will use some contact cement and glue it down
