What is the normal difference that you guys see between grate and dome temp on an indirect cook with a platesetter or stone installed?

About 20 degrees,,not really enough to make a big differenceJefferson .GA.Been egging since 1985 on a medium egg

Just me, but I see NO reason for grate temp on ANY cook. Nor any reason to have something that tells me grate temp. But that's just me.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd.

Depends on what point of the cook. Usually about 25 degrees at the beginning and 10 degrees or less after several hours

OK I was seeing about 40 degrees initially and it made me think that my dome thermometer was off but now it has settled in to about 10 degrees difference

Last weekend when I was doing a pork butt I was seeing a 40* diff almost the entire cook. Most drastic was when it hit the stall. I think my grid probe was too close to the butt.They/Them

I find it is 40 deg different early in a cook, less later on. Dome thermo is calibrated, I have never checked the Maverick - probably should.I go mainly by the dome temp anyways as that is what most recipes here are based on. I monitor the grate because I can do it from from inside to be sure it is staying stable. (Cannot see the dome from inside the house)XLBGE, Small BGE, Homebrew and GuitarsRochester, NY

I don't worry about the grate temp because most folks discuss temp in terms of the dome temp. i have probably noted a 20° difference in the past, but the difference diminishes after some time.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

Why look at the dome temp? Go grate and your cooks will be great.

I've been getting vastly different temperatures lately and different from what you guys see. I'm seeing higher temperatures at the grate. If I have it 250 at the grate I'll often see 200 at the dome. And it seems to persist throughout the cook. I'm wondering if it's because it's so cold outside... today it was -14C (7F) so maybe the dome thermometer is getting cooled from the outside.
