So my orange thermapen has been acting up a bit latlely.Every now and then when i go use it the digital display fails to appear?? I have to close and reopen to get it on.Could the battery be weakening??...its only a year old? It did fall from my pocket to the ground the other day but it wasnt a hard fall and only about 2-3 ft that wouldn't break it, would it? If its the battery what is the replacement one?
thanks.
Hows ya gettin' on, me ol ****?

My battery is 3 plus years old & sitll going strong. The fall might of knocked something loose ?
Not to get technical, but according to chemistry alcohol is a solution...

I bet the drop did some damage. Why not return it for analysis and repair if necessary. BTW my 11 year old Thermapen is still on the original battery that came in it.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

That sucks for a 90 dollar thermometer I figured it would be a little more robust? I mean its built pretty solid and the fall wasn't even that far.Hows ya gettin' on, me ol ****?Kippens.Newfoundland and Labrador. (Canada).

I destroyed mine in every way possible. It was out of warranty when I sent it in. They gave me a new one for $18.Be careful, man! I've got a beverage here.

I had basically dropped in water and it was still almost working. I sent it back when I dropped the xl lid on the probe and chopped it off.
$25 repair after shipping I remember and I am satisfied customer through and through

Open battery compartment.
Remove battery and and take it to the battery store.
Have the technician match it up perfectly.
Go back home and re-install ensuring the polarity is correct.
Or take unit to the store and have the technician do it for you.
The battery in mine is a 'CR2032'.Hood Stars, Wrist Crowns and Obsession Dobs! -
Mine has done the same thing as yours since I got it four years ago. If it's open for too long, it shuts itself off and all I have to do is close it and open it back up and it goes right back on. I think it has a shut off to save the battery.Clarendon Hills, IL

You might try removing the battery and LIGHTLY rub a pencil eraser across the terminals and face of the battery. Sometimes mild corrosion will cause similar problems.A poor widows son.

Mine has been doing the same thing, but then it got washed, no make that bathed, by a cousin doing kitchen clean up duty. Took it apart and dried the insides with methanol. I have to open the probe all the way and wait for a nano second or two for the display to catch up. Temp is still right on. Eventually will need to go back for repair.Large, small and mini now Egging in Rowlett Tx

Mine does the same thing and when I posted it the other day another forum member said they have the same problem. Seems to be pretty common. The battery is a standard cr2032 you can get them anywhere but I doubt that's the problem. Really like my thermapen but thats crappy for a $90 thermometer to have to mess with it to get it to work. May be time to look at other options for me.

Just noticed that this happens only when the thermapen is cold? Left outside for 30 min or so at zero degrees didnt come on, brought it inside waited 5 minutes and it worked??? Weird?Hows ya gettin' on, me ol ****?Kippens.Newfoundland and Labrador. (Canada).

In that case I would replace the battery. It sounds like the voltage may be dropping off. As batteries age, this is a common issue. Don't know if lithium type is available in the coin cells, but they tolerate cold weather better.A poor widows son.

I have been having the same issues. I replaced the batteries and it still seems slow to come on and the the display flickers if the probe is at a certain angle. Good to know they will repair them! I am going to have to send mine in.

might be, but my 11 year old Thermapen is still operating just fine with its original battery! I still think his dropping it caused the problem.bettysnephew said:In that case I would replace the battery. It sounds like the voltage may be dropping off. As batteries age, this is a common issue. Batteries don't like cold weather, try a new one and see if it works.HFX NS

Well I heard back from thermoworks today via email and they told me that at low temps the food grade grease inside the thermapen may thicken and cause a delay in the thermapen coming on.Good to know and a fast response from a great company.Guess I'll keep the TP in my pocket or inside when egging this winter instead of left out in the snow and cold!!Hows ya gettin' on, me ol ****?Kippens.Newfoundland and Labrador.
