New and question about accesories
Hello all,
I am new to the egg world; just recently purchased a large bge. Unfortunately I am currently a bit of a nomad and am not able to set up my egg until permanent residence is completed. So far I have been researching what accessories for the egg are a must or used a lot in general. I bought the place setter with the egg which seems to be a crucial component. So far the digiq or equivalent seems very interesting and I will most likely purchase a pizza stone. The cast iron grids seem like a nice addition for steaks but am not sure. What other accessories are recommended. Look forward to hearing feed back so I can continue the planning process.

My top three accessories in order...Thermapen! This is the best $100 you will spend. Use it on every cook.I would return the Platesetter and purchase the Adjustable Rig from CeramicGrillStore.com. I originally bought a PS, but gave it away shortly after getting my AR. Check out the R&B combo and go from there. Also, if you have questions, call them. They are really great to provide help and support in getting you what you want to make the most of your egg.Here is the thread where I posted my AR when it came in:DigiQ or CyberQ - Both are great for long overnight cooks, but for shorter stuff (around 5 hours or less) I just control manually. Alternatively, and for less money, you can look into getting the Maverick. It doesn't control your fire, but gives you wireless viability to both the pit temp as well as your food. Thank you. In general plan on grilling and smoking, but after seeing what the egg can do I would like to try baking. Mostly plan on cooking beef, poultry and fish. I am not extremely experienced in outdoor cooking in general but have always wanted to become more involved, so I open to feed back of all sorts.

You will want some sort of rig for raised direct cooks-before you jump into after-market toys you can use a couple of fire bricks, or nuts and bolts and a second grid to elevate the cook height to around gasket level or above.

Thank you all for the input, I thought the ET733 seemed a good start and a good deal so I pulled the trigger on one, I will definitely look into a method for a raised grate. And pictures are a must. Thanks again.

Welcome from Midlothian, VA. Get a jacket just for grilling and smoking. Mine has to stay in the garage to air our because although SWMBO loves the food that comes off the Egg, but hates the smell of me when I fire it up. And if you have time, take a shower during the rest period of your meats. You won't be overwhelmed by the smoke flavor and can enjoy your meal better.
I like my butt rubbed and my pork pulled.

Welcome. The ET733 is a good investment, just be careful with the probes. Never submerge them in water. The toy I use most is my foodsaver. If I'm not sealing up something, I'm reheating something I've already sealed.

Thermapen and then wait. Start egging and see what you need. You can make a raised grid for $20. If money's no problem. Take the ps back and get the ar. Personally, can't imagine egging without the thermapen.

thermapen and some way to raise the grid, hard to beat the adjustable rig combo with spider that was mentioned. for me the cast iron grid was just a heavey over rated piece for the egg, the egg gets so hot its just not needed. if you can bring the platesetter back and apply the savings from that and the cast iron grid, your half way there to the adustable rig combofukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

So some method of a raised grid set up will be my next step; I have a couple weeks before I move in to plan. I just ordered a thermapen (ordered two and got a deal of ten dollars off each - a good Christmas present for my dad). I misspoke in my first post; the place setter and a bag of bge lump came free with purchase Lbge so no need to return it... no money lost there. I will cook a couple times before I decide on any other accessories. This has been a great forum for support and I greatly appreciate it; keep it coming! Hopefully soon I can begin to contribute more.

If you get the AR you can cut the legs off the platesetter and use it as the indirect piece on the egg. An angle grinder with a cut blade does it easily

I could not agree more. I have been egging for about a year and a half and all I have is the plate setter, therma pen and the BGE raised grill (Not worth it).
