Heavy Fire!

Yeah, not sure if the title really makes sense.. We were cooking on the LBGE last night, first cleaned out and filled with fresh BGE lump. I got it up to 400 for some bbq chicken legs and plate setter. Anyways, I had it wide open at the bottom, about half open on the top. Then I noticed fire was burping out the bottom. I engaged the screen, and the fire stopped, but continued burning down from above the grate, down into the ash pit.. Anyone have this problem?

It does happen. Most often when you have the low vent open and the daisy shut partway. It's a buildup of secondary gasses under the lump.

I would offer that whenever you have the bottom vent open you engage the screen...not worth the down-side of the errant ember. Just an opinion and we all know what those are worth...Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. Try reversing the openings. Keep the daisy more open, adjust the temp by closing the bottom vent more.
