Hi there!

Is it worst buying for a newbie to keep the dome temp stable.
Thanks,
Dan.

  • I have One and works well but I think you should practice working with your temps using the bottom vent and daisy wheel. Eggs are really easy to hold a temp once you take time to learn your vents.. Plenty of discussions on here about how to control your temp. I know that my grate temp is 25-30 deg higher then my dome depending on how much food I'm cooking also varies it
Once you learn your grill, the dx2 is pretty Easy and a good tool
    Good luck

I have sold a Digi Q and gave away a Party Q. Have about 7 years experience. Learn to cook without it at all. Much more stuff that will help you cook for money spent out there. My advice is not to buy it till you have 5 years experience and then you might find you don't need it. Please understand, they are very good products. But I see new Eggers over and over needing them to cook a chicken.

  • Yeah with with Mickey said, invest in a thermapen first and you will be happier IMO..
I only use my digiQ when i have long slow cooks... But mainly for the IT thermometer and grate temp... Which you can get with a maverick

The digiq II is a great piece of equipment.  Do you NEED it - no.  However, it does make holding low temps very easy and I sleep better not worrying about temperature creep.  I agree that you should learn how to control your temp because you probably won't use the digiq on anything cooking above 300 degrees.  You will find that some charcoal doesn't burn evenly and that can cause temp changes that the digiq will adjust for automatically.  Bottom Line: the digiq is a tool that works very well and if the cost isn't an issue and you do a lot of low and slow, you won't be disappointed.

  • I have one and I use it very seldom and only on a low & slow cooks.  I use it for convenience on overnights or if I have to leave during the cook.  It's a nice tool, but as others have said you're better off learning your egg without it.  A Thermapen is a better investment for any egghead and especially for the novice.  It will become your best friend while egging!

  • I agree with you should learn how to manage your temp control without help. However, I bought one to give me piece of mind on overnight cooks and it was a great investment for me. Do not underestimate the benefit if being able to sleep all night while your low and slow is cooking without having to worry about your fire. Occasionally, your fire won't burn as expected and his eliminates that concern..

I agree. For long overnite cooks, I like to sleep. No worries when the Digi-Q is on.

  • I would not be without a DigiQ. Don't use it all the time, but it is great when you need it.
