8 (butts) is too much

Since we love left-overs, I put 8 butts on the smoke Friday night. I used a simple, but proven rub, but skipped the brown sugar since my wife can't eat it. Instead, I basted the butts heavily with melted raw honey. A huge mess, but the end result was great.
Only issue is that with 8 butts on the XL, using the Ceramic Grill works 2-level grid, they have to touch. I had 5 on the bottom and 3 on top. I found that the bark was not as good due to restricted circulation. I mixed all the meat together and everyone loved it, but just not the exact same.
I think the magic number is no more than 6 - 4 on the bottom and 2 on the top.

I I just had a very similar experience with three 10 lb'ers on the large. I know I rushed my cook though. As long as everyone loved it, that's a success. That XL is loaded, awesome picture!

DId you baste it in honey then rub?

As the butts shrank, could you have moved them a bit?The Naked Whiz

Yes, I basted in slightly melted honey before rubbing - 20 seconds or so in the microwave. I put it on fairly heavy - maybe 1/4 cup per butt. Also, moved them a bit once they shrunk, but it didn't help much as they didn't shrink enough until the bark was established. The other issue with this much pork is that my grids were really nasty when done. Fortunately, I had enough fuel left over to really crank it up and burn it off.--Dave from Leesburg, VA BGE XL, Viking 42", Firepit with $16 grill

Thanks Dave I am going to try that.Looking at your signature you live almost close enough to smell the crust going to charcoal on the two pizzas I tried last night unsuccessfully!

Tried 8 for my nephews graduation. Same issue with restricted air flow. Also had a huge grease fire. Will never do 8 again.
