Broken platesetter fix

Well I had a cook off last weekend and right before putting on ribs I dropped my platesetter and broke it. I pieced it back together and wrapped in foil to get me through the cook. When I got home I figured I would have to buy and new one. Well I was sitting at work and was thinking how i could fix it. This is where you guys might be interested. Well I work for a slurry pump company and we do research on materials. One of these materials is ceramic. I went to the lab and asked the guys if they had anything to that was high temp ceramic adhesive. They said yes and gave me something called Omega-600 High temp cement. I put it work work the other and night and let it cure for 24 hours. The result is perfect and will with stand up to 2600 degrees. If anyone is looking to fix an egg or platesetter or any other ceramic this is an awesome product.

I see plenty of pictures of pieced together plate setters, and i have only heard of one failure during a cook. And i don't know if i could turn my back and walk away from my egg with something supported by a repaired plate setter???

Since I tend to drink beer while I egg this is good to know. Think it would seal a crack in the egg+Green egg, dead animal and alcohol. The "Boro".. TN

I think it will seal a crack. I still had a couple areas in the platesetter lastnight that you could see that crack so I put some on those areas to completely cover it up. When i was done all you could see was a white line where the crack was. Once i cook a couple of time you will not even be able to see that it was ever broken. This stuff is awesome. -

If that platesetter held with foild pans and foild to reinforce while I was at the cook off. This cement will hold it for ever great bonder and rock soild when i was done fixing the crack. -
SOOO many things enter into a repaired ceramic material. Just how clean were the two surfaces when applying the cement??? I guess(?) after many(?) cooks i could get some confidence in it??

You mentioned you work for a slurry pump company. You aren't in GA are you?Congrats on fixing the platesetter.Louisville, GA - 2 Large BGE's

They were pretty clean not grease or anything on them just like smoke. It will hold up. THere is little preasure on the center of the plate anyways. All the preasure in put on the legs. This is why foil was able to hold it together during the cook off. Anyways if it doesnt hold up guess what it was broken anyways and i will buy a new one, but i would almost guarentee that it holds up as long and good as before i broke it.

Chad this sounds like great news but I have a few questions. What is the name of the stuff that you used? Can it be bought commercially? Did you take any before and after pictures? Others might like to know, just in case we have the same problem. Thanks.

Sounds like it worked. What about JB Weld or something like this to support the platesetter after sticking the pieces together (just to support it)?#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

My first thought was Did your chemist tell you if it produced any VOC's at temp? Or if it was food safe?

Looked at the msds and should be fine. Says nothing about releasing voc's. -

@charlietuna I broke my plate setter back in 2008 and fixed it with JB Weld and it has held up hundreds of cooks since then. High temp, low temp, you name it. I clamped it well during the cure, that helps.

I have heard many people say jb weld but didnt think it would hold up to hight heat. Says only up to 500 degree for the pro version. Glad this worked out. -
Just how much does a plate setter cost?? Thinking bake at Thanksgiving, i had a 26 pound bird supported by my plate setter and the dome was about an inch from being fully closed. I got out a ratchet tie down and pulled it closed for the first hour - from then on, it closed. But considering the mess i would have been in at that point - all kinds of food things going on??
-
@Charlie tuna I purchased a plate setter for my large last week for around $50 from my local dealer.Louisville, GA - 2 Large BGE's

Well, for $50. i would bite the bullet just to have it for heavy loads -- and i'm a "back up" guy, especially blessed with that age old saying "when you least expect it" !!! And i must admit, from what i have seen, JB Weld does one heck of a job, even on broken eggs!!
-
I could have bought a new platesetter but for free I fixed it as good as new no jb weld. Once I cook a couple time you will not even be able to tell it was ever broken. You can see in the pic how it was broken in three pieces.
