Mold in the egg

Unknown
edited November -0001 in EggHead Forum
Well, we south west Texans are getting tons and tons of rain over the last 4 weeks or so. I have noticed the last couple times I open up my grill that a good 5 or 10 large spots (nickel to quarter sized) of mold growing in the egg. I scraped it off the grill, and let the egg burn it off the sides. I have used the porcelain cover instead of the flywheel, and close my damper. I still have a problem with a small gap on my seal, never fixed by BBQ galore because the store closed. I am thinking about calling the mother ship and asking that they make BBQ galore get out here and assemble it properly this time.
Any suggestions?

  • spincycle,
Do you cover your egg? Water gets in through the thermometer hole as well as just seeping in through the gasket. I don't think an uncovered Egg can fight off mold by itself.

spincycle,[p]I agree with Naked about keeping it covered especially during the rain. But I would suggest removing the top cover, open damper, maybe even open lid when the sun comes out instead of trapping the moisture in the egg. I roll mine into the garage and keep it covered with the GBW cover. It's well made but a tight fit on the large with the handle and hinge.[p]You could always run a drop light with 60 watt bulb in egg to keep it warm are dry during rainy periods. [p]On your seal issue, is the gap from the lid not seated evenly around the rim or is the felt ran short of making a full circle? Mine has a tiny gap a an occasional wisp of smoke comes out but I think it's not a problem, in fact I hope it helps the lid from sealing shut during cooking![p]Aloha![p]Greg Kemp
  • spincycle,
I'm from South Texas too, I just burn the mold out . As you know everything here rusts or molds.
Were in S. Texas> Victoria here.

  • guava wood,[p]If the egg were a clock, I have about a 1/8 inch gap from 1 oclock to 3oclock. It makes it hard to control temps, and a LOT of smoke comes out there. I think I will get a rain cover. I missed one for cheap on ebay last week.

  • The Naked Whiz,[p]I think I need to get the cover then. Thanks!
