Coke in Pulled Pork???

I have just completed my first butt project and the 2 8-lb butts are mummified in foil/towels in a cooler. My buddy (the one who convinced me to get the egg) tells me to dump a can of Coke on the pulled pork once we're ready to dig in later this afternoon, but that seems awful odd to me. Is this standard practice? What are the benefits? Drawbacks?

Madsapper,[p]Someone once told me about using Dr. Pepper to bast some ribs (pure about a third of the can when you flip them). [p]I did it and the ribs were good (could not tell I had used Dr. Pepper).[p]The soft drinks have alot of sugar and may enhance the smoke flavor.[p]Smokey

Madsapper, it's not what I would call "standard" practice but I have heard of this before. I have heard of people pouring it into the pulled pork before reheating it. Probably provides a bit of moisture to offset what may be lost during the reheating.

    Madsapper,
I do that all the time when I reheat large amounts of pulled pork in a crock pot. It must be the regular COKE not diet nor will Pepsi work. Most people don't tell other people they do this because of the strange thoughts that come to mind, but it works quite well, without adding sweetness. BTW it works even better when reheating beef!

Madsapper,[p]Straight Coca-Cola, RC Cola, or Dr. Pepper works wonderful for reheating both pulled pork & brisket.[p]If you are inclined to mop or spray with soda pop, per cup of any of the above, add 1T corn oil & some of the rub you used on the meat. Warm it on the stove so the spices can blend. [p]~thirdeye~
