i never had a problem with the starter cubes (saw dust/parrafin).[p]i get much better results when i use 4 or maybe even 5 chunks to start the fire quickly, but they don't last long at that rate.[p]bought a parrafin/sawdust fireplace log (Shaw's supermarket brand, was 1.99 i think), and one day i just broke of chunks with a flat-head screwdriver.
all sizes, etc.[p]those light really fast due to the broken edges, and they are so cheap, if i want i'll use five spread around to establish a hot fire quickly.[p]i can light 5 and drop them in place faster than i can start it with a torch in 5 spots, plus, no sparks

I have been using this tool for the past several months. I don't think the masters here like this thing, but I will challenge any other tool to start the Egg cheaper, quicker and more efficent than this. It works great. Jwirlwind, couldn't access that web site. WOuld you explain what it is that you do? I personally don't have any problem with any way that anybody starts a fire as long as I don't have to eat off of it. If I'm eating off of it then I want NO lighter fluid. I use an electric start because I find them easy (I have a plug next to my table) and reliable. I also use the paraffin starters and I also use (and like) GreenHeat but I'm running out of my supply of that. I have used a chimney starter before but I don't like the ash that comes out from the crumbled newspaper. I would use my mapp torch but the last time I used it, the flame came all the way down to the tank so I cut it off and haven't tried it since. [p]I'm starting to think that an eternal Big Green Egg flame is theonly way to go. Start it once and then continue to cook and load more lump when you need to cook. Keep it down around 200 and it should go for about 30 hours and if I never leave town I can do it.

I'm not a "master", therefore I'm curious as to why you state that that the masters don't like it. It looks efficent; however all I use is Mapp Gas or the BGE starter cubes; mainly the BGE starters. I've tried various started cubes, but alway's come back to them.

i dont have the igniter, but love my weed burner. cant crank it up to full power to light the egg, but it works great. also use it to clean my fire pit when the darn smokers throw their butts in it

Thanks for the comments guys. 4-5 of the starter cubes would work great but definitely use em up too fast. Intriqued with the idea of chopping up a fire log. Might look into that but any smell or flavor with that? And are those suckers available in the summer in Florida? [p]Might also look into the Mapp starter. I just want to find an easy way to start it up that will get a decent fire in a reasonable time at a reasonable cost! LOL
