Grate holes?
Uncle Phil
Posts: 669
My egg has bee terrible on temperature, so I cleaned it out and found the grate was clogged with small ash. I noticed the grate has larger holes on one side and smaller on the other. So which one goes to the bottom of the egg? If the larger holes are inside it seems that larger coals would rest inside until they burn down and fall through.[p]Uncle Phil
A quick reply is appreciated as I want to get this back together and cook something!

Uncle Phil,
I have the lager opening down- to the outside.

Clay Q,[p]Thanks, Clay.
I went ahead and put the large holes Up and put in some lump. It lit and climbed to 600 pretty quick. Hard to tell if that is the right way, in that I only have enough lump to go over the holes in the sides.
I did open the lid too quickly when the thing was about 500 degrees and I have this smell of buring arm hair following me around! I even cracked the lid about an inch for a second or two first. I had shut the egg up including the ceriamic cap, so that may have had something to do with the air situation as any air where there was little air, unlike having the daisy wheel in place and the draft door open a scouch. Them there Eggs can be dangerous when they want to be![p]Uncle Phil

Uncle Phil, you have them up-side down and the airflow is restricted... turn the grate over ; large holes go down SO THAT ANY ASH falls out. If ash accumulates in the "funnel" as you currently have it positioned, you will get no air and no fire. Ash will sit on the lip. The BOTTOM GRATE, flip it over .... larger hole positioned down....plus you get the venturi effect as the incoming air swirls up into the fire.... GREAT 4th to ya !

tn slagamater,
Thanks. Makes sence.
Soon as I cook dinner tonight, I will flip the grate. Actually, big holes down is how I did have it! Should leave well enough alone![p]Phil

Uncle Phil,[p]Right...[p]Look at the outside edge of the plate....[p]One way...it is angled allowing it to sit down in the
firebox.[p]The aangle should go fron wide on the top side, to tapering toward the bottom.[p]Capiche?[p]Have a "grate" 4'th[p]Evans
I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!! -
Uncle Phil, if you have big hole down on the grate AND stir the old remaining lump to get any ash pushed out before each cook .... you will be one happy egger...with a good fire going to boot.

Chubby,[p]Got it. If you look at the taper it makes sence.
Have a grate one yourself... And stay safe![p]Phil

Chubby,
