Why did my fire box crack?
Hi,[p]I was wondering if anybody could tell me what I did wrong? The fire box in my large BGE has a crack running from the top to the bottom. I have not had it over 800 degrees, and it cools off on its own. I have never shocked it with cold or droped it or anything stupid. Of course I did not send in my warranty stuff. Not that I need a new one yet. It still works, I just don't want it to crack any more and become two or more pieces.[p]Thanks for any insight![p]Rick

Rick Moroso,
Welcome to the club. My firebox has been cracked for over 3 years and I have no plans on replacing it. It seems that a large percentage of the Large BGE's fireboxes crack and it does not bother it at all. If you bought it new then it is under warranty and you can get it replaced for just the shipping charge or you might be able to talk you dealer into getting you one under the warranty shipped with his next shipment from BGE.

Rick Moroso,
Thats what fire boxes do.
Mine is in 5 pieces and I have a new one in the box. Not till I cant get it stand on its own will I change it.

Rick Moroso,
Because you put too much pressure on it to perform, cook after cook after cook?[p]LOL[p]I wouldn't sweat it, they are suppose to crack, it's a rite of passage for the Egg Cult.

<p />Rick Moroso,

Confucius say: what's a little crack between friends?[p]Seriously look on the bright side - your box cracked because it had stress at that point - now it can move. BTW why haven't you sent in the warranty info? Any proof of purchase like cancelled check, credit card statement - HELPFUL dealer?

Rick Moroso,[p]oh, you screwed up bigtime. [p]by using your egg at over 150 degrees, you've definitely exposed the firebox and fire-ring to temperatures which will eventually make the ceramic brittle and subject to cracking. Only by maintaining your large bge in the initial, pristine and unheated condition can you completely avoid this problem.[p]When you get the new firebox, please clean out the ash and old parts, renew the original status of the cooker, and store it away so you no longer must endure this affliction. [p]Otherwise you'll forever be subject to worry about the condition of your ceramics. Unless, of course, you follow Alton Brown, Emeril, and Flay and choose to cook in a flower pot.[p]best, HS

Rick Moroso,
Dont even worry about it. Just put lump in there and fire her up. You will see there is absolutely NO DIFFERENCE in performance. And like most of us who got replacement fireboxes....you will store it somehwere and use it only if your current firebox becomes completely usless. ANd the only way I see that happening is if u remove it from your egg, drop it, and breaks into enough pieces where it can not be repaired.
I am past 2 yrs now and my replacement is still in storage.

Rick Moroso,
Here is a pointer to my Ceramic FAQ which deals with this. They crack. They break. It's normal. Mine broke into 3 pieces a few months after I got it. That was four years ago. The replacement still sits in the garage, waiting for the day when it is called to duty. But it isn't a matter of what you did. They just crack and break.

Rick Moroso,[p]I finally brought my cracked firebox in to the store here in Atlanta and got me a new firebox. I waited until the old one was in six pieces. They were great at the store - I gave them my pieces and they gave me a new one.[p]It happens....nothing to worry about.

Rick Moroso,[p]Wait WAIT WAIT!!!! [p]Let me say it![p]Me too![p]:)[p]Seriously, I have a new firebox sitting in the shop waiting for the day that I might even break the BGE tape on the shipping box to replace the first large cracked firebox (I have two now).[p]It's been there for over 5 years, I use these green guys several times a week. Aint no big deal.[p]bc[p]

Rick Moroso,
Would it just make sense for BGE to sell a 3 piece fire box?
-
Daddyo,
I've been toying with the idea of cutting my whole firebox into 3 parts, but I haven't had the nerve. I figure that I'll break it trying to cut it up.
