Just ordered my first pallet of Humphrey today. Price was right. With shipping, it worked out to $16 per bag. No sales tax. I'll give a full report after running some through.

I bought a bag a few weeks ago and I like it. The pieces were a lot bigger than the Mali's I was using.I haven't found any scrap, yet. Good stuff.

Just opened my first bag of Humphrey. Nice big pieces with barely any small stuff at the bottom. Here is a pic.

They have very good lump.   $16 a bag is a great price shipped.

I bought a pallet of 30 bags and split with another member of the forum. Only stipulation was that I had to pick it up at the shipping hub. No big deal. They loaded it right on my truck with the forklift and the job was only a 30 min. drive. Potatoes and boneless skinless chicken breasts on now.

I agree with cortguitarman.  I took 10 bags of that palette and have cooked twice with it so far.  Great stuff.  Looking forward to making it my regular charcoal.

@Shiff I felt like it took a little longer to get to temp than royal oak, but all in all I am completely impressed. I can't wait to do a low and slow to see how long it can good out. My feeling is that if it takes a little longer to light than it is harder wood and will last longer.

I used a 40 pound bag of it for multiple low and high temp cooks.  I liked it when it is fresh from the bag, nice smoke, fairly high temp.  However, when I relight it for the next cook, it sparked a lot and didn't reach higher temps very easily.  I think it was great for low and slow when using fresh from the bag but I was less than impressed on relights.  I've been using Royal Oak from Walmart for the last week and it works much better on relights (less sparks and higher temps).  After I finish the last of the 8.8 lb bag of Royal Oak, I'm opening a 20 lb bag of dragon's breath and will report back.

I started using a Hi-Q grate a few months ago and it really helped to make the fire come up to temp very quickly - much better air flow.  I also stir the old charcoal first, then pour new stuff on top and light that.

@dlk7 I completely agree with your assessment and comparison between Humphrey's and RO. The RO burns up faster and doesn't give the natural smoke flavor like Humphrey's but for the cost difference and a chunk of hickory it's not that big of a deal.

Where do you get your Dragon's Breath? I emailed them and never heard back. If the shipped price is around $40 for a 40lb bag I'd like to try it.

I ordered it by calling the contact phone number on their website.  The shipping cost more than the charcoal but I wanted to try it and figured if it is really good I would find a group near Nashville to go in on a pallet drop.  I have three 20 poound bags so I can get a good sense of how it works.  So far I've tried BGE, RO, Humphreys, and Ozark Oak.  I still have Dragons Breath, Wicked Good, and Halls Hill to try.

Thanks for the update. I was hoping the price would be similar to Humphreys. Let me know if it is worth ordering.

@dlk7-how did you like the Ozark Oak....I have a very limited lump selection locally and would have to order around 100#'s of it to justify the cost-not a problem but curious as to your assessment.

I really like the Ozark Oak - good heat, low ash, hardly any sparks.  I can't get it locally and it too cost me more to ship than the lump cost.  I just need to see if I like Dragon's Breath better.

My local stores only carry BGE and Royal Oak. I can drive an hour for a wide variety of lump, but I don't see the point with fuel prices being so high. I would like to try wicked good in the future.
