Maverick ET732 vs. ThermoWorks TW8060
I’m a brand new member here and I’ve had my large BGE for
about a month now. I am looking to get
nice thermometer to use for long-duration cooking of briskets, port butts,
etc. I was looking very seriously at the
Maverick ET732 and even had one on order until I started seeing many reports of
probes not lasting very long (including breaking after 3-4 cooks!). I cancelled my order and did some more
digging and came across the ThermoWorks TW8060, which seems like a much more
robust unit. I know it doesn’t have the
remote readout unit, but I can live without that. My main concern and question is with the wire
thickness on the ThermoWorks probes.
They looks like they’re quite a bit thicker than the Maverick probe
wires and I’m concerned about how much of a gap there would be when the BGE lid
is closed.
1) Does anyone here have experience
in using the TW8060 and does the probe wire thickness keep too much of a gap in
the lid to the point where it affects temperature stability?
2) Is it possible to run the probe lines through
the top vents?
3) ...or are the reports of probe issues on the Maverick ET732 greatly exaggerated and could I rely on that unit instead of purchasing the TW8060?
Thanks in advance for the
help.

I have the ET732 and love it! That being said, my food probe went bad between my 3rd and 4th cook. I am pretty certain that it got too wet when washing it. I feel it was my error. After reading the operators manual closely, I realized it specifically says not to submerge probe in water. I ordered the longer lead probes and I started doing two things 1. I delicately wash with a damp cloth. 2. Wrap the probe wires that are inside the egg in aluminum foil to protect from heat. Haven't had an issue since. The remote readout is really nice because you can see whats going on while your working on other things in the kitchen, and also keeps you inside when it might be cold and windy. I also use a thermapen which is made by thermoworks and love that as well. I would also love to hear about the TW8060.

I have the ET732 and love it. I wonder if the folks that had problems with the wires were using it in a hot environment.
Mine has probably been through 20+ low and slow cooks - no problems so far. Love the remote monitoring - for me thats what makes it wonderful.
