What Charcoal do you prefer & use ???

What lump charcoal do you prefer to use beside, BGE ?

  • I am not usually a "brand" buyer, but I have found that the majority of charcoal available is in too small pieces (and a lot falls into the ash trap) and also burns too quickly.  I use the BGE brand.  Even with that, at the end of the bag I dump it into my ash bucket and then pick acceptable pieces out.  I end up dumping a few cups worth of dust and small pieces.

    XLBGE X 2, LBGE (gave this one to my daughter), MBGE and lots of toys

  • Only brand I can find is RO and I have to stock up because it isn't always on the shelf.
    Large, small, and a mini
  • Royal Oak here as well.  Unfortunately Wally World did not carry it during the Christmas season.  Been using the stuff they sell at Sams Club.  I've tried about 4 or 5 different lumps,  Royal Oak has performed the best.

    I used wicked, el gaucho, RO and cowboy - maybe one or two others.  The best for a low/slow if Wicked hand down, however, for the price you can't beat RO - wicked is just wicked expensive.

    I like Maple Leaf as well, right now I have RO though and seems fine as well.

  • Been using Full Circle my last couple of bags. It seems to be well priced at our local store. In the Bay Area and it burns really well.  Here in CA, Lazzarri is a popular brand and well priced at a local feed store. However, it's all mesquite and a bit overpowering for my taste. Has anyone every tried the Costco Kirkland brand lump? I have never seen it in our Costco, but I'm thinking they should start getting their spring merchandise in soon...

    As a new egger I have tried BGE and Royal Oak and both (I know both made by RO) are good for me. WM is now out of RO and I got some cowboy (rated good by Naked Whiz) and some Best of the West mesquite. Won't be able to try one of the last two til next week.

    I have used royal oak, wicked good, ozark oak, and recently cowboy. I got a 20 pound bag of cowboy from my local ace for believe $12.99 and I am pretty happy with it. The wicked good is too expensive. The ozark oak was great when it was $8.95 a 10 pound bag with free shipping but is now $10.95 a bag. My parents go to Arkansas twice a year and pass right by me on the way home so I am going to start getting them to load up the back of the suv with ozark oak. They got a couple bags last time for like $4 a 10 pound bag. Ozark oak is my favorite all around lump.

    I use nothing but Grove Charcoal. It's great but not sure you can get it outside the midwest.
    I pay $12.50 for a 20lb bag.

  • Lookin to make my own. Just need to locate some drums.
  • Used the grove too.  Real good price from Woodman's.  Other local options are Royal Oak and Cowboy.

  • I've used cowboy and BGE before, I usually use Royal Oak, It is relatively cheap and works well, stock up when you see it on the shelf at Walmart.

    I just recently discovered a dealer that is selling "The Good One" lump in my area.  It is hands down better than the Ozark Oak or the RO green bag that I normally use.  If there is anybody on here from the Omaha area that wants a good deal on some Ozark Oak or RO green bag let me know.  I have a mix of about 20 ten pound bags I would like to sell.

    I've been using BGE;  I've been able to get it for $5 off with coupons at my local hardware store.  I just loaded up the egg with Wicked Good to try and the first pour looks good.

    I have a beef clod on since last night and I used el gaucho - very nice - hard wood nice sized pieces - burns a long time

    RO and nothing but RO.. I don't care what logo is on the bag.  It's all the same.
