Hi again everyone,
Your user logins in the "alternate universe" should now be ready for activation. Your gallery passwords will work now. Forum only profiles will need to be "activated" first.[p]The new site is not yet finished; and, it has not yet been approved by the "mothership." They've seen it, but still waiting for feedback. What do ya'll think of the forum?[p]I intend to add a more "last25" like "flat" display mode; and, picture upload is also available for registered users, but, I've not yet enabled it. RSS feeds are also available but not yet enabled.[p]Have fun,
WMK

    WMK,
I relly like the new site, one thought....would it be possible for us the users to configure how many post are shown per page...ie...show 25, show 50, show 100 when viewing the forum....Keep up the great work[p]Wess

Looks great. Any way to make the print a little larger for us old folks???? I also like to scroll my page to bring the post to the top of the screen.[p]Thanks for the hard work and a place to play.[p]Regards,

    WessB,
I'm with you. I've been a proponent of this for a long time, and have been taken to task several times for it. But frankly, if some of the "scut" posts and offensive posts would be somewhat reduced, that wouldn't bother me. At least we would have an idea of who is doing these type posts.

WessB, I've suggested that we allow a posting by anyone, but that any posting entered by someone who is NOT logged in could be deleted by anyone who IS logged on. Supposedly to do this would be pretty complex but would solve some problems.

    WMK,
I've visited the site a couple of times and just now tried to activate my account. I'm already lost. I'm sure with time and effort I'll get acclimated, but what I like about the present forum is ease of use. it's great for us dummies.

  • New Bob,[p]I see you are on a Windows PC, using Internet Explorer/[p]If you have a scroll mouse you can hols the CTRL key & scroll the mouse to make the text bigger or smaller. [p]You can also use the "VIEW" menu at the top of the IE window & choose "TEXT SIZE" to modify the size of your displayed text.

    aka mr. Earl,
As a charter member of the "dummies club" let me chime in: same problem. When I try to activate my account, it says I already have. Plus I can't find out how to change my password.[p]Ken

Everyone having problems with login activation,
Appologies for the glitches, activating existing (i.e. imported forum profiles) is not part of the "standard" pacakge. I'm still working out the bugs -- especially error condititions.[p]Accounts that already have passwords are considered "activated" to prevent others from misusing, or overwriting, your profiles (by mistake, or otherwise.) We have had some problems with this in the past.[p]The activatation process requires a valid email address to which a confirmation email is sent to ensure the address is valid. We will not use the address for any other purpose. But if this email goes to a "blackhole", then, the account get's stuck in limbo.

    New Bob,
I have a large monitor too; and, the print is a bit small for me too. And, unfortunately the "ctrl-thumbwheel" trick doesn't seem to work on style sheets; or, only on certain styles -- have to look into that -- it is a pretty cool feature -- it works fine on this page. We'll work it out.
    Thanks for the input!

    jiarby,
Good idea, but the style sheets aren't set up for it I think. Will look into modifying the template to accomodate. We've already done some customization, so, shouldn't be too bad. We're trying to keep what we had and get what we didn't. Tough line to walk -- but we'll try to find it.

WMK,[p]Just tried mine. Got the email. But when I try and go to the hyperlink to finish the activation, I get an error with the following:[p]"Cannot find server - This page cannot be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings."[p]Maybe you've got it down for some work, so I'll try again later...[p]Tonia

    fishlessman,
Wow! My emails during testing came immediately, but, I'm on the same server. I wouldn't have thought it would take so long though. Not sure what's up with that.

Nope, sight is up and running. Sounds like a "transient internet glitch", or, server hicupped.

    BlueSmoke,
I reset your password so your profile would not say "already activated".
    Please give it another try.
If all goes as it's supposed to, you may change your password during the activation process by supplying one (two copies of course,) on the profile edit form that should appear when you try to activate.
    Apologies for the glitches,

    Hi again all,
We will be working to make the "new" forum, etc. as much like the old one as possible w/out giving up whatever of the new stuff we like.[p]The "activation" process is intended to allow your profiles to be password protected so that only you can post as you. And, so that new members do not inadvertantly overwrite your profiles and take your handle. This has happened before; and, it makes a bit of a mess.[p]Like the original forum, registration is *not* required to post on the new forum. Unlike the original, however, only registered users' handles will be linked; and, only registered users can view other's profiles, upload pictures and attachments, etc.[p]Also unlike the original, guest posters will need to enter a short graphic "security code" (6 letters) -- a minor inconvenience for a human, but, a major headache for the automated spammers that keep posting on our forum and in the guest book.
WMK[p]Finally, all of these things are configurable. This is just our starting point.
    WMK

  • How do get out of this loop---I try to log in and I get a screen pop up that says I need to Activate my Profile...when I try to Activate my profile it says it's already activated and can't be activated again?
It doesn't seem to prevent me from seeing the forum posts..lets see if this reply gets posted

  • WMK,
While I like the way the alternate keeps posts in chrono order(within a thread), I like the WIDE MARGINS and Larger print of the Old one.[p]Please check out http://mb9.scout.com/fgavsvfrm17 for an example of showing followups on same page as orig post.[p]Thanks for you efforts to make it better!

WMK,[p]With respect and appreciation for all you do for this forum, I have to say that I prefer this style format over the newer ones and I think we'd be losing a big part of the personality of this forum by changing over.[p]I feel this format's lack of features tends to keep things fresh and spontaneous.... which I find more akin to real conversation and much more entertaining than the newer style forums.... the BBQ Forum uses this basic structure as well and it's one of the most active forums on the net.[p]Granted, there are some things here that could use improvement but I feel this forum style has been really successful all these years and this board is a good example of less working for the better.[p]John

WooDoggies,[p]This is only a test of the features that so many ask for.
The primary difference from my perspective in newer forum is that the messages are stored in a database instead of gobs of static html files.[p]We can, moving forward, make new display formats indistinguishable from this one -- right down to the post a reply form at the bottom of each message. None of the newer forums do that. We can.[p]This can then be an option for those that prefer it.[p]We can have the best of both worlds I think.[p]Thanks for the feedback.

WMK,[p]Well that's a relief! Thanks for the clarification.
If you can create a format indistinguishable from this one then I'm less apt to feel like my entire egg family up and moved to Belarus while I was on vacation.
It also makes me feel better about maintaining the all-inclusive atmosphere that makes this place so accessible to new folks and non-eggers..... the sign-in feature still bugs me a bit though.....
But as Robert Heinlein once wrote, "I am only an egg." :~)[p]John[p][p]

I'm noticed the newbie egger bar. How is this working? I'm familar with the concept on other forums.
I don't consider myself a newbie though. Might not been as frequent a poster as lots of others but Ive been around since 98 or so.
