Out of ideas! (dome/band issues continue...)
Now the dome acts like it wants to fall closed. The dome drops a full 3 inches after being fully opened. It has not fallen closed completely (yet), but it easily could do so if (a) opened quickly/carelessly (it would rebound closed) or (b) significant movement was applied to the grill (ie scrubbing the grate with wire brush without holding the dome open). The egg is on level ground - at least as level as a contractor can pour a patio - LOL.
Here are some ideas:
1) The springs do not appear to have enough "bite" (wire through the opening). It looks as though they are barely hanging on.
2) The bolts holding the hinges are not even/level; there is also quite a bit of play in the entire hinge assembly, suggesting it may need tightening
3) The bands are not even spaced all around. I was never able to attain this nirvana, so it may not the problem as it relates to the dome falling, but no doubt it contributes to the alignment issues.
I am going to put up the pictures and a video link in hopes that someone has "been there..." Someone always has...
Thanks in advance!

OK ... tell us about that lesson? The bolts are supposed to be reuseable. I watched Fred Bernardo redo a gasket on video and he had no problem with them ... although he had an alignment problem that he solved (mostly) by applying his own body weight where needed.
Your springs do look precariously close to the edge.
You should check the hinge for proper tightness ... should have been done at factory, but some times finger tight is what we get.
The bands on mine are not even all around either but it seats well and my some does not settle back like yours.
First thing I'd do is chech that hinge assembly ... perhaps the springs were mounted backwards (I don't knoe if that is possible)
Good luck and I'm sure more knowledgeable peeps will chime in soon ....

JLNC- I see your point on the top ring. I have to admit though that with respect to the bands I often hear 3 (seemingly) contradictory instructions:
1) seat the bottom band as far down as possible (ie against the ceramic lip)
2) seat the top band as high as possible (ie against the top ceramic lip)
3) ensure that the bands are evenly spaced all around
Perhaps I am missing something. The spacing of the bands is predetermined by the hinge (see photo with tape measure at hinge). If this spacing is to be maintained all around it would not be possible for the bands to be fully positioned against the ceramic stops. My band spacing is as follows:
hinge/rear - 3/8" (6/16")
right - 5/8" (10/16")
left - 7/16"
front - 11/16" - roughly double the spacing at the hinge
This is close to what I would expect I guess - you can move the top band higher the farther you are from the (preset) hinge, but close to the preset hinge the spacing is a given.
I have not asked BGE for a new hinge (or any other hardware) specifically, but I have asked their advice. They offered to send a new set of assembly instructions. Mechanically speaking I have always considered myself decent. I can swap out a garage door opener or washing machine timer/pump - even do a brake job on the family car in a pinch. I suppose I fall somewhere in between "change the A/C filter" and "add a bed/bathroom in the attic with no permits and no contractors." After 3-4 passes at getting this egg together, I should be able to figure it out. So I tend to agree - albeit somewhat self-serving - that there may be some underlying hardware issue. I know from replacing the seal that the ceramic lip is not perfectly flat. There is a distinct hump in one section. I may never get a "dollar bill test" to work properly. If that were the only issue though I would be thrilled at this point!

Squeezy- On the bolts, after loosening and tightening the originals a few times to try and align the dome (before I gave up on that dream) the threads were stripped from being dragged against the hole in the band. The nut would not loosen, and cranking on it only twisted the band, since head of the carriage bolt was in the square band hole. I cut the bolt with a dremel and hacksaw, which was tedious to say the least - and a little noisy for our neighborhood at 11:30 PM. Be sure to put the plastic white clips on the hinge before you start cutting the bolts!
-
I guess you just plain wore 'em out! I feel you pain though! Still think your hinge assembly is key to the problem here...Never eat anything passed through a window unless you're a seagull ... BGE Lg.

I agree Squeezy. There is just something about reusing bent bolts that goes against the laws of the universe. The last go around I finally used a torque wrench at the 125 inch pounds (~10 foot pounds). I am not sure if that is internet lore or official guidance, but either way it was definitely eye opening to realize how much more tightening was needed (beyond already well bent) to get the torque to 125 - all this after initial install and retighening with a standard 3/8" drive socket wrench.
When things go wrong we tend to blame ourselves to some extent. I bought my Egg from a patio store that happens to sell them (large only, standard accessories, no tables). This was the only store in town open on Sunday. They have a guy that comes and cooks on the weekend and gets a commission; he is the only "expert". Luckily he was there when they loaded it because they gave me the wrong pieces. When I went back to the local BBQ store a week later for a pizza stone, I quickly realized I had purchased from the wrong place. The BBQ store fully assembles all their eggs, and the BGE line represents about 40% of their entire store sales. The day I stopped by the two guys working there were putting together eggs. They tried to help as best they could from afar. The moral: buy from someone who makes their living off of them (not a sideline). Don't get in a hurry. You won't save any time (or money) in long run! Buy assembled of course.

By all that you have shown and done it sounds as if your bands are out of round. If they twisted at all during assembly or if they came that way it will cause all of the symptoms you are having. A little over or under bite is acceptable. The bands do not have to be even at all points, as long as the dollar bill thing works.

I had similar issue with my large egg had to fight over a week and half with BGE Canada to get a replacement. They finally decided to send a replacement and it took five weeks to receive my replacement part after fighthing for over a week! Where's the customer service in that BGE Canada!!! I love my BGE a lot but BGE canada customer service is extremelly orible. I started a petion to send to the head office in the us about it and so far I have 12 people in Halifax area to sign and the issue they experience with BGE canada. Hopefully the US BGE office will act on this and give them a wake up call. Two weeks ago I was gone buy two new large egg and decided to go with Kamado Joe instead due to BGE lack of support for there customers in Canada. Kamado Joe customer service is beyond excellent and there grill are better built ( they actually fixed all the issues the egg has!) and they listen to there customer service! This is my two cents worth!Cheers! Shawn My Blog: http://hrmcreativebbq.blogspot.com/ My Dads Custom Handles Blog http://dannyscarvings.blogspot.com

You bent your top band when the screw stripped and you kept twisting. I can see where the tabs on the upper band don't line up right and that is what is pulling that section down the stress on the carriage bolt to straighten the band. I did the same thing when I used a locking nut once and my dome never lined up right again. I ended up spending the $100 on a new band.

I've only had my egg for about a month now and I guess I'm blessed. Went together easy, I fired her up to over 800º once and my original gasket is still good. I tighten the bolts when I think of it (gently) as I'm scared of hurtng my egg...
Only one place to buy one in my town ... an electrical contractor/gas fireplace seller installer. Other than stupid high prices, they have been good to me ....

I also think the poor quality of the stock carriage bolts won't allow too many adjustments. Poor quality for the last 6 months IMO. We stock quite a few nickel plated after market bolts/nuts around that very reason, a Home Depot stock item.

No doubt I likely torqued the top band in the process of trying to fix the alignment. If the alignment is any worse for it, I certainly cannot tell. -
I take my eggs apart once a year and replace them with stainless carriage bolts and nuts. My 2 larges cost like $6 a year for stainless. I don't replace my small or mini cause they stay in teh garage.

It looks exactly like mine did when I twisted the band. The carriage bolt caught on the one side with the square and twisted the metal. When you tighten the band it straightens to fit the bolt and puts pressure on the right side of the band downwards. I never tried it but you might want try a regular hex bolt instead of a carriage bolt and that way the square in the carriage bolt won't put pressure to straighten it out.

Well the US customer service folks are certainly friendly. I received a high heat replacement gasket after I asked for it - not under warranty, so that was nice. I had already bought/installed one from high-que, but nice to have a backup I guess (though I doubt I will ever install it given the spray adhesive, neccesity for cardboard templates for over-spray etc; just looks like a pain). BGE advised me to sear steaks at 600, pizza at 500 (platesetter feet up, grid on P/S legs and stone on grid), and chicken at 400.
As for the dome falling issue, BGE has not offered any real solution, except to leave the daisy wheel on at all times with the lid open and rotated rearward to add weight to oppose the falling down tendency. This is a duct tape solution that is impractical and, frankly, unacceptable. First, I do not have the cast iron wheel on when I preheat. Second, I do not want to open the daisy wheel fully each time I open the lid, only to readjust it upon closing; even as a newbie I know that one. As best I can determine, the band issue is unrelated to the dome problem - unless - there is not enough separation on the bands to properly tension the springs. But BGE said it was not necessary/advised to remove the springs to reset the bands, so I heeded that advice. The last email I received said, basically, there was nothing they could do. -

I really like this stainless setup:

Stainless bands with compression springs. I have read where stainless bolts on the regular bands can strip out the square hole, but from this thread it looks like many use them. -

I am not sure if he sells them but I communicated with him via the YouTube contact info. He said this adjustment video was forthcoming, and here it is:

Interesting customization of an egg by someone who's obviously very talented. I think he has another video where he installs a gas burner in one. Even the daisy wheel is custom. -
theres only a few things that can be wrong for the dome to drop. upsidedown hinge (yours is on right), bolts on the lower spring are loose (yours look tight), egg is leaning forward (it doesnt take much lean to do this, put a level on the gasket surfase on the base and check it), faulty springs, either a crack or they are too long, ive had to replace mine after they cracked), the hinge assembly was made a fraction of an inch too short not stretching the spings enough. if its leaning forward shim the forward feet with a dime and see if that helps, i would try that anyways. balancing the dome with the daisy isnt what you want to do, who said that at customer service?

I would be interested to see a picture of someone's springs similar to the picture above. On mine it just seems like their is precariously little wire on the other side of the hole. Seems like this would result in more of a stretching of the end of the spring (to straight from curved), versus getting the full assistance of the coils, when opening; if the springs are not fully engaging that might make the lid sag. Intuitively it seems like the spring should/would attach at the midpoint of the hook instead of the end.

I am with you....either springs or hinge. I see your point on level ground. This is all paved patio. The portion next to the house is (ever so slightly) sloped away from the foundation, but I only store the egg there. I do clean/fill it there from time to time, and the tenancy of the dome to droop in that location is worse than other areas - any movement of the egg there and the dome will fall closed. Keep in mind this is an almost imperceptible slope, so slight that I never really noticed it until I had this problem. On other perfectly level sections of the patio I have the same issue. I can rotate the egg 90 degrees in a single location and at each position the dome still drops 3 inches after being fully opened. What has me stumped is that this is a new problem. I cannot figure out what changed. BGE customer service said the springs they would send me are the same ones I already have...

IIIIII gotta have that setup. Where does one get this stainless band/compression spring setup?
the individual is in Denmark and looks to be a BGE dealer.

my band was an old model, back then they were expirimenting with bands and spring styles, bge sent me several sets of different styles and sizes before i could get mine to work right. my new band is like yours, the springs are all the same now unless you have a defective one. the spring on mine just slides over the slot a little bit, i can easily slide it off with an open dome and a screwdriver. looking at the dimple the spring sits in on top, i dont think mine hangs down that far. if they dont fix it, maybe you could bend it back up a little to get more spring tension

No. I'm not BGE sellers. All the stainless is just made for fun, because I have the time to do it..
I'm not doing anything to sell it. ;-)

Try removing the spring on your hinge! But before tyrap the egg shut! After loosen the bolts for the band and the two small bolts on the band on each side of the big bolt. Re-adjust the egg bands re-tighten all the bolts then put springs bacck carefully! If the egg is less then 5 years old I would demand a new set of bands since the bands are warranteed for five years!Cheers!
