Do you guys suggest I remove the lid to install the new gasket? Or can it be done with the lid on. I have alarge BGE. Using the white replacement gasket sent to me by BGE. I have the 3M 77, and will spray into a cup and apply with a brush.
Let me know, thanks!

I removed mine, it would have been a huge pain had I not when trying to get the rim clean on the lid. But I have a XL and it is downright simple to remove the lid on an XL (just loosen the top ring bolt and it's off). I've heard it's more difficult with a large.

remove is easier for sure. Why don't you consider just applying the gasket to the bottom? They should be easy enough to do without removing the lid. considering the thickness of the nomex gasket, you really need to install on base and dome. removing the dome will make the replacement go a lot smoother. can you simply loosen the band and remove the dome without fooling with the hinge/springs, etc? that is the way i did it on my xl. the lower band stays tight on the base and the upper band can be moved up and out of the way.
if you were installing a rutland, you could do the base.

Since folks go gasketless, I see no reason why a simple bottom only nomex wouldn't work. I'll let you know how it turns out in a couple of years. Mine is recently installed so I have to burn through it first.

I installed a Rutland on the bottom only per Naked Whiz instructions and did not remove the dome. Took about an hour and it's worked great since.

I will be applying a Permatex copper gasket to my Large this Friday (I'll be taking pics and posting them, if I can). While removing the lid would make scraping the top gasket off a bit easier, its so fried right now I can scrape it off with a thumbnail; a few minutes with a putty knife should be all it needs.I'll be applying the goop to the bottom only, cover with Saran Wrap, and close the lid and allow to cure, so leaving it in the banding will help that part too.

Botch - good plan
BTW - did you see this http://www.nakedwhiz.com/gasketsafety/permatex.htm
I understand it works well but you would have to remove the dome
