Bitter taste when grilling Veggies

I have an XL egg and love it. However I seem to run into a problem where the veggies I grill end up tasting bitter. I get this problem whether I'm at low heat 300 or at a higher heat around 500 to 600. I ensure that the coals are red hot and not smoking. I simply toss the veggies in Olive Oil and place them either directly onto the grill or I use a grill basket.
any ideas are appreciated.

Jeff,I'm sure others will weight in with more experience and correct me if I'm wrong. However, I've read Olive oil will turn bitter with higher heats sooner that other oils, like canola or sunflower seed. For this reason, I stopped using olive oil with my BGE with better results. Hope this helps.Joe

I think it might be the olive oil... especially if it's EVOO.context is important

I second LDD, I ditched the olive oil and opted for canola. Works well.Paula West Texas

Too much oil. Regardless of the type, you're using too much, which is creating bitter smoke.

Is using Canola Oil the best substitute or is there a better oil to use such as peanut oil etc.

Perhaps try putting them in a foil pan. Like Feeding Frenzy said, it could be that the oil is dripping on the coals creating funky smoke.Or...use no oil and put them in a pan with with some chicken over them in a raised grid. The chicken fat is a natural lubricant.
Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
I use Olive Oil with veggies all the time. It is not EVOO, just OO and they come out good. I have had problems with veggies not tasting good when I put them on as I'm warming the grill up for the main dish. I found, just like meats, that I need to let the egg burn clear before putting any food on.
