Cook this...you can throw it on a plank if you want. soak the planks and then cook per the recipe. -
Soak the plank for about 4 hours. Then set your egg to 350' direct, season your salmon.I like to put a rub or herbs with two thin lemon slices.Put plank and fish on the egg and cook to your desired doneness. Usually 15-20 minutes for me, depending on the thicknesss of your fish.
I have done tilapia, cod and walleye the same way. -
I have had success with planking Salmon direct at 425-450 for about 17-20 minutes depending on the thickness of the fillets.

If you want the plank to provide some smoke for the cook, see if you can get your hands on some alder planks. You can soak them if you like, but put them on the grid at a relatively hot temp (400-450) and wait for the plank to start smoking before adding the fish. If all you want is to cook a piece of fish on a piece of wood, soak the wood thoroughly and put the fish on the plank before putting it over the fire.
Here's how I did some shrimp:

I have only had this type of grill for 2 months, so maybe I have no business trying to give this advice... but here is the very first thing I ever cooked over lump charcoal (and it had FABULOUS flavor) !
Soak cedar plank 30 minutes (then grilling direct at 350.)
Season a salmon filet in this order with: soy sauce, honey, garlic salt, pepper. I would have to check my notes at home, but I think I did both sides. Can't remember for sure.
Put cedar on grill until it smokes (only takes a few minutes) and then flip over. Drizzle some evoo on plank to keep fish from sticking. Put salmon on the plank skin side down. The recipe I have says 30 minutes (because other things are being cooked on the grill at the same time and all the timing for the full meal works out perfectly).
Good luck w/ whatever recipe / method you choose. I am in the mood for some salmon again soon, so will give one of these other suggested methods a try next. -
I just learned first hand why you suggested turning the heated plank. It bowed side to side so much it looked like a mini canoe.
Salmon was wonderful.
