spyder + ceramic stone = plate setter?

for indirect cooking when the suggested setup calls for the BGE plate setter, does the spyder and the ceramic stone (from the ceramic grill store) provide the same thing?

I'm no Expert but the photos I have seen seem like they would act very similar if not exactly like a plate setter. Maybe someone with more eggsperience can verify.

pretty much..indirect is just that..something blocking the direct heat from the coals..that said some devices do a better job than others...you're fine with what you proposed..

thanks

if you use a spider and 13" ceramic stone to create an indirect set up, I recommend you have a way to lift the bge grid up above the fire ring. Raising the grid above the fire ring prevents you from capping the fire ring by loading the entire grid with meat. Cap the fire ring and there is no way for the heat to rise.
A more comparable platesetter set up is the woo3 and ceramic stone. The woo3 puts the ceramic stone 1/4 inch above the fire ring and bge grid at the felt line. Plus, without the stone, the woo3 creates a direct set up with the bge grid at the felt line. Also, the woo3 can hold a wok like the spider and our oval stone for ribs and brisket. For the XL, it would be the xl woo2 and 17.5" stone. xl woo2 includes a spider configuration.
Feel free to call me, if you need to discuss more. Spider, woo3 and such are my creations. Phone number is on the site. twww.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc. -
There's some common ring to me with this question - by chance did you and your sons attend the Peoria Eggfest on Saturday? If you did it was a pleasure to have met you guys!...and thanks for traveling down our way!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Haven't been to Peoria (yet!). I'm just a newbie trying to figure out the dynamics of the BGE.

I may just have to call you today. I'm doing my first chicken and just can't seem to get my head wrapped around the dynamics of the plate setter, legs up or legs down. I bought the Spyder, adjustable rings and ceramic stone in lieu of the plate setter. The web site indicated using the spyder and 13" stone was adequate for air flow.

you can flip the spider up to get it higher up in the egg.
but, if i were you, i'd call tjv and save yourself lots of frustration. he's a helpful guy! -
If you have the adjustable rig, you'll all set. Just set the rig crossbars on the lowest notch setting (1.5" above fire ring), set stone and pan on the crossbars, throw bge grid on top of rig, add meat and cook away!
By setting the crossbars on the lowest bracket setting, you lifted the stone and pan (indirect pieces) up above the fire ring, so no way to cap the fire ring and hinder airflow. You can always go up one notch, middle bracket setting, to raise the stone and pan higher, if capping the fire ring worries you. With this indirect set up, you can fill the fire ring with lump if you are worried about running out of lump.
If you need to get at the lump, just slip on some welding gloves, slide your hands under the rig's top ring and lift the loaded rig out, cooker is empty.
If you want to do a two grid indirect cook with pork shoulder or brisket, then you'll need set the stone and pan on the spider: need the vertical headroom for the big pieces of meat. The lower grid goes on the rig's lowest notch setting which is 1.5 inches above the fire ring, still can't cap fire ring.www.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc. -
Haven't used my plate setter since getting the spider/stone setup.
