my temp is too hot-HELP

I;m a newbie and I am trying my first Butt. I was up at 3:30, meat on my 4, my temp was right at 250 and now I just checked and it's up to 325. My bottom vent is 1/2 inch and the top is closed. What do I do to get the temp down. I have a lot of wood chunks in there, maybe that is the problem??

just shut the bottom vent to 1/4 and let it ride. when did you put the butt on? and what is the temp of your meat?

Do I completely close the top vents to bring the temperature down or open it wider? I have the bottom vent and 1/4 of an inch now and it's at 300.

leave it there a bit and it will settle down. how many wood chunks do you have in? we do three about three inches long and maybe an inch on the fat side of the wedge. they really do not burn if the egg is shut when you open the dome it gets more air and they will flair up. so it was only that hot for about an hour really?

have your top vent open just a crack just a tiny bit and the bottom 1/4. it is going to take about 20 minutes to start dropping.

It is usually too late to reduce temp after it has been at a higher temp for any length of time.
Best you can do is just barely crack the intake and exhaust.

that is quite a few. but that is for us. we are not big on smoke and only use any wood if we are doing butts. or a handful of chips. it is personal
but I call that a lot based on what we use. and might be where the high temp is coming from. has it come down any? -
It's calmed down to 270 but my butt temp is already at 171

that's ok it is probably going to hold there for awhile as the egg comes down in temp and as it renders out the fat and gets all tender and juicy :)it could even be a few hours. the egg will drop a bit more and maybe in a bit as you get closer to 250 just tap the draft a tiny bit more open. so you do not drop to far below
