Digi Q Adapter smoke
Bobbert
Posts: 27
Quick question: When I have been using the digi Q, I installed the adapter like the instructions indicated (as far as I can tell) but smoke seems to pour back throught the adapter. I had kept the daisy only opened a toothpick width. The only thing that seemed to stop the "backwards traveling smoke" was opening the daisy all the way up. It worries me doing this because I think it may cause the temp to overshoot.
I don't know if this matters, but I set the damper to 1/3 to 1/2 open.
Am I still OK or do I need to do something different?
Thanks
Bob

The smoke traveling back through the blower is due to restriction up through the lump bet and or the DFMT.
Once the air flow establishes a flow path in the lump bed if there is some opening in the DFMT the back smoke will stop.
The DigiQ's blower does not stop free air passing through so when the blower is idle it will always be possible there may be back smoke.
Make sure you close the blower slider down and you will eliminate any overshooting of the pit temperature. I am using the Viper (10cmf) blower and I have found I have to close the slider down to 1/4 open (just under the 1/3 mark on the slider) an that eliminated any over shooting of pit temperature.
The Stoker has a gravity flap door that closes when the blower is idle.
I have been able to leave the DFMT off of the egg with the Stoker and once I learned to close the slider down to 1/4 or a little less I can do the same with the DigiQ.

Great Tip! Thanks for the suggestion.
I tend to overthink (ie: worry) too much on things where my experience is limited.
I'll just keep the DFMT set wide open and keep the damper closed to the 1/4 mark, then relax.
I really appreciate the help sir... -
Some of this depends a little at the temperature you are cooking at.
If there is a lot of smoking wood in the egg more smoke may be present.
Close the slider to 1/4 or 1/3 open leave the DFMT on. Close the slider and open the pedals at the widest point to the width of a round tooth pick. With those settings you should be fine.
Check the egg a couple of times and if all is going well then you are set.
Good cooking.
