Temp problems

My daughter gave me a Redi-Chek remote temp gauge. Never used one before today, always relied on my dome Tru-Temp gauge.

Trying to cook a butt......the remote probe says my internal temp (lying directly on the grill) is 260, dome gauge says 210!!

Am I doing something wrong??

Check your therms in boiling water to see if they are calibrated correctly. -RP

Yeah the boiling water calibration is your best bet, calibrate both, see what you get in boiling water. Your should get 212 F

ok, moved the probe from the grill up to the v-rack with the butt. Now it is reading about the same as the dome gauge.

I guess its just a lot hotter directly on the grill.

I cooked two butts last weekend and got very similar readings in that my grid temp (taken from a remote maverick) was 250F whereas the dome temp was 220F.

After looking at my setup I noticed the temp probe on the grid was not centered over of the plate setter, but was directly exposed to the lump. After moving the probe over the plate setter the temps adjusted to what I thought they should have been.

    Cheers,
