Cast Iron.

I helped my parents clean out the debris at one of their two rental houses today. Among the items were a cast iron dutch oven with 2 lids, a cast iron "stick" corn bread pan, and a small(about 6 inch) cast iron skillet. All were a bit rusty with the skillet in the best shape. My Mom gave them to me and said I could burn them off in a fire place.
In the egg do I put them directly on the coals or on a grid? 500 degrees dome good enough? One load of charcoal till it cools off?

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

There was a post not too long ago about cast iron reconditioning. Can't find it now but it worked for me. I lighty sanded it with 1000 grit paper to remove the rust, slathered the dutch oven pot with bacon grease put it on a cookie sheet in the oven @ 250 for about 3 hours. Worked perfectly. Hope that helps.

Nice score!

Don't put it directly on the lump. Though it is a old timer's approach, it's also a good way to crack your cast iron
A little metal brush, brass maybe, and elbow grease

I found this very interesting.

Burning it off maybe old fashioned but it is what Grandma did and I have Her grandmothers cornbread pan.

Great find.
I bought a preseasoned dutch oven and when my wiife wife saw it she asked why? When I told her she went to a kitchen cabinet and took 55 things out and in the back was a CI round griddle, 12" skillet, and a larger skillet.
When I asked where they came from she said they were my mom's. Dont use due to ceramic cooktop but she did not want to get rid of them.
Already used the greiddle and smaller skillet.
They were still seasoned with no rust. We have been in our house 32 years.
Who would have thought she would have kept them that long!!!
I have one great friend and wife.
