Hi all,
So i have a thermometer question. I have a piece of garbage one at the house that i rarely use and found that out when i smoked some corned beef.
I see lots of positive comments about the thermopen and a few folks that use some sort of wireless thermometer and i have seen a couple apps even for the iphone. i.e. igrill
I am sure there will be a lot of suggestions but i guess i am trying to get a feel for what people like. the idea of a wireless contraption sounds awesome and the thermopen seems cool. I think that for the money some of the wirless thermometers are comparable to the thermopen and wondering what would be a better buy.
Thanks!

Get the Thermapen and then go to Home Depot and buy a $20 remote. The thermapen is wonderful and my HD remote has lasted for 5 years. I also have the Maverick E73 which I hate.

I find the Thermapen to be very useful. It's easy to use, accurate, very portable, and is virutally maintenance free.

No question regarding the Thermapen. It's indispensible. I use it on Meat, candy/caramel making, bread, brine temp, Milk frothing for Cappucino's, outdoor temperatures.... you name it!!
I also have a cheap Polder remote for roasts, pulled pork, etc. Handy but I think one with wireless connection might be handier.
Ultimately I want a wireless Stoker......

My 2¢ -
An "instant read" and a "wireless" both have different uses. The "instant read", like a thermapen, will of course measure the doneness of the food. The wireless will monitor both the egg temp and the food temp, usually for longer cooks.
If I had to choose only one, I'd choose the thermapen, I use it on almost every cook. I love my ET-73, but I only use it on "low & slow" cooks.
Hope that helps.Packerland, Wisconsin -
What kind of cooking do you do? If you do a lot of low 'n slow, a Thermapen won't wake you up in the middle of the night when your fire gets too hot or too low. A Maverick 732 will.
Do you do a lot of relatively fast cooks during normal waking hours? then you probably don't want to hassle with a wireless and a Thermapen will be just what you need.
Just depends what YOU want to use it for...New Orleans LA -
Thanks everyone. I think that the thermapen would be the best option for now as I am just getting comfortable with some cooks. I would love to do the low and slows but not enough time at the moment and maybe the thermapen might just be enough.
Thanks again -
I say get the Thermapen rather than a wireless probe. Most everyone will agree that the quality is stellar. There is no reason to hesitate opening the dome for a quick Thermapen reading, as it takes only a few seconds. The egg will return to the pre dome opening temp, also in a matter of seconds.
