Tel-Tru Thermometers

I'd like to get a new dome thermometer for my low and slow cooks. I'll keep the existing one for regular grilling, and swap in the tru-tel for smoking.

Anyone use this one:

Barbecue Thermometer, 3 inch aluminum dial UT300, 4 inch stem, 50/550 degrees F

It looks perfect for smoking. Will it fit in the LBGE dome thermometer hole? I don't see a width for the stem.

BGE is now selling them stock on the Eggs.
The one you linked looks like it has a large threaded base. Would not be the best for the Egg.

Good eye, LOL I missed that when I looked as my eye was focused on the high end temp. of 550. Even though he said for lo & slow I would get that reads at least 750. Ya never know if you might want to go higher.

  • I intend to use 2 thermometers, the original one for grilling (which goes up to 750 i think), and then a more constrained one for bbq that has a range hopefully between 50 and 500 or so. That one will be used for cold and hot smoking. I'd like a restricted range so that I have bigger graduations around the target temp ranges.
  • Even tho I just got my egg new-in-the-box as a christmas present, it appears to have been manufactured back in 2009, so I have the old thermometer on it.

Maybe I'll see if my dealer has the new thermometers for sale...

Even the new ones will not have the range you want.
Give Tel-Tru a call. They are very nice to deal with.

  • Just ordered a therm from Tel Tru today.....they make 2 replacement therms for the BGE/Kamados......both are labeled LT-225R. The difference between the 2 models bearing that number is that one has a dial range of 100 - 750*F, while the other has a dial range of 200 - 1,000*. Both thers are essentially the same with that one exception.

There is another model with a shorter stem, but it operates about 13-15% from accuracy on the BGE due to its shorter stem and less protrusion into the dome cavity. The model with the longer stem ---- accurate to within 1.8% --- requires the use of a one inch spacer on the outside of the dome between dome and therm.

I take no credit for any of the foregoing info. Fishlessman on this site gave me an education over the weekend that really enlightened me. Based on his kindness, I ordered the 5 inch stem model of the LT 225R today from Tel-Tru. The site will point you in the direction fo the correct model. if you find this model helpful, thank Fishlessman. I am merely parroting all that he taught me over the weekend.
  • Awesome info, Jack... even if you were reciting. It's appreciated. I'm beginning to question my stock BGE dome therm. I've calibrated to 212, but who's to say its accurate above. I'll be investing in a Tel-Tru.

    CHeers.
  • No problem, friend. The great thing about this site and the folks on it is that everyone is so eager to help others improve at their gilling. So thank ole Fishless.

Now, the one thing you have to remember is that the 5 inch stem model, altho more accurate, does require that 1 inch spacer on the outside, which Fishless says is prone to breakage because it doesn't sit fluch with the dome. Accordingly, he has opted for the shorter stem, less accurate model which is less prone to breakage.

I might change my mind if I have the same problem, but I'm changing brangs for the sake of accuracy to begin with.....so, I'm gonna go for the accuracy. I can always change and get the other f it's a problem.

Hope the comments help........Tel-Tru has a pretty easy site to locate the therms in question and to order on line.

    Jack,
The standard BGE dome thermometer has a 4" probe and the Tel-Tru has a 5". I've never understood why some people think that extra 1 friggen inch is going to wreak havoc on everything they cook! Granted I use a 1/2" wooden toy wheel to take up half of that extra length, but do so more to keep the back of the thermometer off the hot ceramic surface! The most important hint is to take that metal spring clip off and throw it in the trash! Gravity will hold your thermometer in place and that way if you EVER do a 25# turkey then you can merely extract the thermometer, close the dome and re-insert the Tel-Tru! All jokes aside, but bending your probe because of that extra inch isn't an issue!

  • RRp, I might be wrong, but I think the whole point of shortening the stem length in the dome with the addition of the 1 inch spacer on the outside is to give the 5 inch stem the same exposure inide the dome as the stock thermometer......at least, that's what I've been told. I am a newbee and I might be wrong. But, that's what I was told by someone who had more experience than I do with other therms. For what it's worth. I'll know better after a dozen or so cooks with the new therm.
  • But, I do agree that I don't think that breakage is gonna be an issue for me. Famous last words!!

Jack - I've been egging with 3 Tru-Tels for 9 years now in my L, M & S and have yet to bend one in use. Good night!

RRP you have more Egg cooks than I. But I have bent 2 and had to reorder at Tel-Tur as no warranty for idots. I do use the same wheels (not stained) but to only keep it out of the cooking product as most of my cooks are high in dome.
It only cost me 2 units to be more careful.

I use the short one on my mini and seems to work fine.
I have thought I needed to check it out after Fishlessman did the post but have not done yet. I am cooking hotter in the mini than the large or small most of the time and just not an issure.

  • I hear ya, Mickey. Well, if somebody's gonna clip a couple of'em off, it's gonna be me. Now, when I stopped at my friendly Egg dealer's today, he explained that the new Eggs are coming out with Tel-Tru's stock on the units. I'm wondering if those Tel-Trus are 4 inch stem jobs as opposed to 5 inch, which would eliminate the need for the spacer. I'll let you know when his order arrives.......it might be a moot point anyway if it's a 4 incher. At any rate, thanks for the tip......and I agree.....it might not be an issue at all. Just deferring to more experienced Eggers. No one on here has steered me wrong yet. That's why I spend so much time on here!!
