I am new to using the spider rig, I just bought mine last week. I was going to blacken a steak yesterday and realized that the lid of a #12 dutch oven turned upside down fits perfectly as a griddle plate for the spider.
This might not be a new tip but I just figured it out.

When I cook a chuck roast in my cast iron dutch oven I sear the chuck in the bottom of my cido. Works great.
