Fuzzy insulation strip around rim

Hi,
The strips of "fireproof" (or so I thought) material in the strips that ring the rim of the top and bottom of the egg have burned/deteriorated away to very little.
How important is it to fix/change/replace/maintain this stuff?
Is it normal that it burns away over time?
If I wanted to put on a fresh new application of it, do I razor blade away the remains of what is there now, and just sort of stick it on?
General thoughts?
THANKS!!

I do not use them but there are several options.A lot of folks on here replace the original ones with a Nomex gasket. Some do top and bottom, others, bottom only. There is also a Rutland gasket some use,as well as a Coltronics.Frank from Houma used HiTemp Permatex Copper gasket maker on a couple.I think if you go to the search forum and type in gasket you will get a lot of stuff to read.Good Luck.

Unless you are doing lots of low slow where you need to keep the heat contained, I don't feel the gasket is that important.
My large has had the some burnt gasket for 8 years and does lots of 6-7 hour ribs with no problem. -
You are talking about the felt cushion for the dome when it closes on the base. If it's deteriorated be careful closing the egg.
I have one large egg that has a nomex gasket and it works great and it's been on that egg for almost two years. I have another large egg and it's felt gasket is pretty much nonexistent has been for a long time.
My egg with the nomex gasket on it had two felt gaskets on it that didn't last a month. I used a good utility knife blade and rubbing alcohol. Tim

The stock gasket is not fire-proof. I've, literally, burned mine twice. Got tired of that. So I've installed a Rutland Inc 5/8"X 84" Stove Gasket Tape 90 (one source: http://www.amazon.com/Rutland-Stove-Gasket-Tape-90/dp/B000KKKG2C/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1297732755&sr=8-6) using the Permatex Ultra Copper gasket maker (found in most auto parts stores) for the adhesive. Apply only to the base - no need to apply to the dome.

Once you decide what you're going to go with, this is a good "how to" video:
