Oregon Scientific AW131 Therm

Hey everyone. Before my DigiQ, I had bought an Oregon Scientific AW131 Thermometer. I bought it some time last year. It worked twice and then stopped. I eventually got the two units to communicate with each other but the temp in my kitchen was reading 170F! I called Oregon Scientific this morning and was told that I needed a new probe. I asked her how the probe could be out after only using it twice. She asked me what I was using it in, to which I replied a smoker. AH HA, she said! These are not suppose to be used in smokers.
WHAT??? Are you freakin kidding me? I asked her where people use them and she said for short grilling items such as steaks. Um, my steaks cook for about 3.5 minutes. Why on earth would anyone use a wireless thermometer for grilling? She told me that the smoke penetrates the probe wire and ruins the connection. I told her that no where in the owner's manual or the web site does it tell you NOT to use this in a smoker. She apologized and suggested that I buy 4-5 probes at a time for $12.95 each + $9.95 shipping.
In hindsight, I guess wrapping the probe in tin foil might have helped? Anybody else heard such a thing with this particular unit? Absolutely freakin crazy to make a wireless thermometer that is not suppose to be used in a smoker.

Sounds crazy to me

sounds like it is time to consider someone else's unit.

Well I don't hardly ever use this anymore since I got my DigiQ but I've got a couple of butts going on the Egg Saturday and thought I would use it in one of the butts. I really don't need it but I think it's pretty slack to sell this unit and not mention anywhere that you shouldn't use it in a smoker.

You might want to buy some ceramic sleeve and put the cable through this. You can buy it by the foot and it will help to dissipate the heat.

I had a similar experience with Oregon Scientific. I had a wired grill thermo from them that burned out within a month. I asked for a replacement and they sent me 2 really cheap outdoor air temp units. WTF?Food & Fire - The carnivorous ramblings of a gluten-free grill geek.

Do I need to worry about my DigiQ probe wires being damaged by heat and smoke too? Also, what the heck are ceramic sleeves?

Can't answer the sleeves question, but the DigiQ wires should be fine for smoke. Heat is an entirely different thing.
According to their website, the probes are shielded for 1000 F. The guru can only measure to temps of 475 F, so you should be fine. That being said, the shielding can be weakened through repeated use.
I would only use my power draft system for a low and slow cooks (most likely @250 F but I guess I could go into the lower 300s). It just doesn't make sense IMO to be using it for higher temps.
